Bedford Half Marathon - 12th December 2004
The Bedford Harriers Half Marathon, held on Sunday 12th December 2004, was a challenging course held in Wootton,
and with a record entry of 1600 runners, proved to be an enjoyable yet bizarre event for Biggleswade Athletic Club.
On the positive side, fourteen Biggleswade AC runners took part - a record number of entries from the club.
Three lady runners (Deb, Yvonne and Amanda) were all competing in their first half marathon race and all ran superbly.
Ian Skerratt was the first Biggleswade runner home, to claim the club's Half Marathon shield, just 7 days after finishing the Luton Marathon in 3hr 12mins.
Karen Worrall had a brilliant run to lead the Biggleswade ladies home, and finished 11th lady overall, just 3 months after the birth of her
3rd child. Not to be outdone, Jan Forrester showed that she's still going strong by claiming the Beds County Championship Ladies Veteran
50 trophy.
On the bizarre side, Zoe and Damien got stuck in pre-race traffic on the roads leading to Wootton and only just arrived in time for
the delayed start. While Gavin missed the start completely - he was rumoured to be locked in a Portaloo. To cap it all off,
a local farmer decided to enter the Christmas Spirit by herding his flock of sheep across the road at the 12 mile marker, "bahring"
the way for dozens of flabbergasted (and slightly upset) runners!
Congratulations to Beds Harriers AC for another well organised event.

Three Counties XC (Northampton) - 28th November 2004
On Sunday 28th November, the Club competed in the second race of this years "Three Counties Cross Country League" held in Northampton.
Although the team was depleted by injury, all did well on the challenging course. This years two lap 7.5Km course was round Delapre Golf Course
with undulating fields and woodlands thrown in for good measure. Plus many fallen trees and exposed tree roots to either hurdle or negotiate.
Gavin Elliott lead the male team home finishing in 32nd position after shaking off early pressure from team mate David Brown who finished
in 51st place. Karen Worrell put in a exceptional run to come in 5th for the ladies. Jan Forrester finished well after being 'spiked' on this tight
testing course. The Club finished 9th overall to cement their good start in this years league.

Three Counties XC (Wing) - 31st October 2004
The club made a superb start to this years "Three Counties Cross Country League". The first race of the season was held at Wing, Buckinghamshire
on a very muddy and hilly course. All competitors had to run over 7.5Km across undulating fields and farmland, twice having to cross a deep stream
and vaulting several gates. All athletes ran exceptionally well especially Debbie Bryant who picked up some very important points for the club,
and Tanya Tatchley who ran a great race for a lady who has not attempted cross country before. The outstanding achievements of all athletes have
catapulted Biggleswade Athletic Club into 7th place over all in the league and there are still four races to go.

Reims 10K, France - 16th - 18th October 2004
Eleven club runners and supporters set off for Reims on Saturday 16th October, hoping for a smooth crossing (especially Zoe)
and some pleasant French Wine (especially Stuart, Chris and Steve). The weather stayed fine, and Reims was reached in time to register
for the race the following morning. Sunday morning was overcast and cool - perfect for the 10km race. The 3300 runners made the early stages quite precarious and Zoe was brought down in the first kilometre when a lady tripped in front of her.
She gamely got up and completed the race battered and bruised. All nine runners ran excellent times, with the evergreen Chris leading us
all home, and Jennifer setting another superb PB. Sunday afternoon was spent viewing the famous Cathedral, watching the sodden marathon
runners (by now it was raining), and visiting the old Reims GP Motor Racing circuit - on which we set a new "minibus" lap record.
Some excellent French cuisine and wine on Sunday evening ended a very enjoyable day. On Monday, after an early morning 7 mile run along
the canal in the dark! we had a leisurely drive back towards Calais, stopping off in St Omer for lunch and some shopping,
before returning home. Thanks to everyone for making it a very enjoyable weekend. Next year we may venture to Poland, but not by Minibus!

Annual Rounders Match - 31st August 2004
Seniors 6 - Juniors 4 1/2
Tuesday 31st August saw the rivalry between young and old clash head on in the form of the annual Rounders match between the reigning champions the "Seniors" versus the "Juniors".
The Juniors were looking for revenge after last years narrow defeat. Egos were truly on show as the Seniors lead by Tim Huxtable and Damo Pitts first stepped out to bat.
Hard hitting Alan Goodman soon was smacking the ball around but with so many juniors packing the out field it wasn't long before the seniors sustained heavy casualties as one by one many were stumped out.
Even Gavin was ran out by some excellent fielding by the "Bests" after getting a rounder (although he did insist that video evidence should be used for all tight refereeing decisions next year).
Val Kemp showed she was ambidextrous by being able to bat with both arms equally well (both poorly) making the juniors scamper like ants to cover any holes in their fielding. Jennifer also made an appearance off the physio bench to show that she could still run.
The Juniors were soon put into bat. But with many outstanding catches by Man of the Match - Tanya Tatchleys boyfriend John, they also began to fall by the way side.
Tim "The Hustler" Huxtable did a great job keeping back stop and with the excellent tactic of name calling managed to put many of the junior girls off their game. With Chris Clarke finally catching a junior out at the third attempt
and Zoe Dawson learning how to throw (even like a girl) the Seniors gained the upper hand to win by a narrow margin once again 6 - 4 1/2.
A great night was had by all and a wonderful celebration barbecue was served afterwards. Thanks must go to all who helped out to make this an excellent evening especially, Dave Brown, the BBQ chefs and the judges (who performed well under pressure).

Wow, what a day....... yes I know it threw it down, and yes I know we all got soaked, but it was a great day all the same.
Our athletes ran superbly, and the support team cheered throughout the day. Everyone needs a pat on the back for representing Biggleswade AC so well.
A huge thank you also must go to Jim and Tim H. for acting as tour guides and getting the support team to some excellent viewing spots as well as a great Chinese afterwards.
For those who didn't go - you missed a brilliant day and a monumental display by all our runners in the capital. 90% of them getting PB's.
Well done all!!!
