  • Kingfisher Way Training Run - 31st December 2005

    A record number of 22 runners turnout out for the annual winter pilgrimage along the 21 mile Kingfisher Way. 10 runners started in Baldock, the source of the River Ivel, with Lindsey and Tan intending to run as far as possible given their recent lack of training and injury problems. Newcomer Catherine from the RSPB Running Association also joined us (thanks for the photos Catherine). Tan made it as far as Arlesey, and Lindsey made it all the way to Biggleswade (12.5m) to record his longest run ever.

    In places the footpath was muddy and slippery from the recent snow and rain, but a good pace was maintained, with everyone keeping together. On reaching Biggleswade, the incoming runners were met by the welcome sight of 10 more runners who joined them to run the final 8 miles to Tempsford. What a turnout! Later, Stu met us just south of Sandy, and finally Penny joined in at the Girtford Bridge.

    Twenty runners finally arrived at Tempsford, 3hrs 57mins after leaving Baldock, for a well earned drink in the Wheatsheaf pub. Congratulations to everyone who took part. It was a very enjoyable way to spend a Saturday morning.

    Runners: Chris, Neil, Gav, Simon, Roger, Debs, Tan, Lindsey, Catherine (RSPB), Nigel, Mark, Elaine, Julie, Ray, Lee, Andy (Riverside), Paula, Jen, Nat, Nat’s man, Stu, Penny.

    Bedford Half Marathon - 11th December 2005

    Eight Club runners toed the line along with 1200 other runners for the Beds Harriers Half Marathon, held over a challenging course in Wootton last Sunday. Unfortunately Deb Bryant had to pull out early in the race owing to illness, but the remaining runners finished the course on a freezing December morning. First runner home for the club was Neil Gregory, fresh from his race in France the previous weekend. Damien Pitts was next home, followed closely by Andy Bruce. Ian Skerrett, who had run a magnificent 3hr 12min in the Luton Marathon the previous weekend, was still suffering effects of his marathon and tired to finish less than one minute in front off Nigel Bush. Next home was Jan Forrester who ducked under 1hr 50m to finish 5th Lady Vet 50. Kevin White, a new club member, ran a superb race to record a new PB.

    Results are as follows;

    Neil Gregory - 156th - 1hr 30mins 24secs

    Nene Valley Harriers 10 Mile - 4th December 2005

    A disappointing number of Biggleswade AC runners made the trip to Peterborough for the Club’s 10 mile championship race, with many either injured or saving themselves for the Club’s Half Marathon championship race at Wootton one week later. The four runners who did toe the start line saw ideal cool and still conditions on this renowned fast flat course. New member Geoff Muskett set off to run a fast time, but he paid for his early exuberance and faded in the 2nd half. Damien Pitts took full advantage of the conditions and ran a steady race to run a new PB. But he could not prevent "the older" Nigel Bush from taking the club championship – based on age graded times. Mark Peacock, another new club member, ran a solid race in his first 10 mile event.

    Results are as follows;

    Damien Pitts - 69mins 03secs (Actual), 69mins 03secs (Age Graded)

    A large contingent from Biggleswade Athletic Club flew out to Dublin, Ireland to support five of their runners compete in this years Dublin Marathon which was held on Monday 31st October. With the 191 mile Round Norfolk Relay race fast approaching, several members of th Club decided to test their fitness over the half marathon distance last weekend. Seven runners ran the Grunty Fen Half Marathon near Ely, and the cool conditions and flat fenland course contributed to some fast times. First home for the Club was Neil Gregory in 1hr 28m, his fastest half marathon for over a decade. Two minutes later was Simon Fawcett in a time very close to his PB, and Nigel Bush finished in 1hr 35m. The next two to finish, Paul Batson and Natalie Darlow ran superbly to record new PBs, followed by Tony Haymes and Tanya Tatchley who ran a steady race in her build up to next month’s Dublin Marathon. Cracken Edge Fell Race - 10th August 2005

    On Wednesday 10 August 2005, 5 brave members of the Club gave Cracken Edge Fell Race their best shot. The race was approximately 7 miles and ascended over 1000 feet. Supported in the week by various visitors with the majority of encouragement coming on the night from Jennifer Hutchings and Keith Lakin (Bedford Harriers).

    Ken Prior risking the use of his own knees for the next fortnight came in first for Biggleswade with a time of 1.01:39. Followed by Damien Pitts 1.04:39, Giles Keen 1.07:40, Zoë Dawson 1.08:25 and Jan Forrester 1.12:25.

    Not content with the punishment of the previous evening 4 of the runners (Damien feigning a trip to Manchester) continued the trip with a second easier(!) run with the Pennine Fell Runners. A huge thank you to Alison Brentnall and Andy Howie for making us most welcome and for hanging about whilst us southern softies recovered from every change in the gradient of Hayfield and surrounds.

    Everton Fun Run - 11th June 2005

    Our Chairman, Nigel Bush organised yet another fantastic 3 Mile Trail Run on Saturday 11th June 2005 as part of this year's friendly Everton village fete. Fourty one competitors took to the roads and footpaths of Everton to run or walk a flat, yet challenging race through some of the prettiest scenary in the village at a time when bright red poppies are covering the fields. Overall winner in a very fast time of 16mins 18secs was Alan Turnbill of Riverside Runners, only to be shortly followed by Nick Gilbert in an amazing time of 17mins 45secs to win the junior race. The ever-successful Karen Worrall also ran a great race to finish in the top senior ladies spot in a time of 19m 31s ahead of a very fast Val Kemp and last year's winner Zoe Dawson, who also ran well after recently returning to running from an injury. Junior, Laura Gilbert followed in her brother's footsteps by keeping up with some of the Clubs fastest senior runners, showing that she will also be one to watch for the future.

    Bedford 6 - 18th May 2005

    Eight members of the Club braved the windy conditions of a late night race in Beford on Wednesday 18th May for the annual Bedford 6 road race. This was a challenging course of 6 miles, with an extremely grueling hill at the three and a half mile mark, which combined with the wind, made it difficult for even the most determined runner. Despite this, fantastic performances were seen by all, and cheered on by injured Club runner, Natalie Darlow. Neil Gregory and Nigel Bush lead the Club runners with some of their best times this year. Debbie Bryant looked back to full form with an outstanding finishing time of 46 mins and 33 secs, knocking 4 minutes off of her time for the same race last year. Colin Harries and Debbie Knott also showed great determiniation, finishing within 2 minutes of each other. Tanya Tatchley finished next, achieving a personal best time of 51 mins and 39 secs, knocking 13 minutes off of last year's time. The rapidly improving Sarah Geeson-Orsgood and Sam Grist also ran superbly finishing in 55 mins 55 seconds and 58 mins 55 secs respectively, for their first ever races as Club members. Well done to you all.

    In breezy but sunny conditions 5 female members of the Club took part in the annual St Albans Ladies 10k on Sunday 8th May. This course is renound for being a particularly challenging hilly course, requiring brut strength and determination. Silverstone 10K - 3rd May 2005

    Six Club runners made the annual pilgrimage to the Home of British Motor Racing on the 3rd May to run in the famous Silverstone 10K race. The race comprises two laps of the Grand Prix circuit, and the wide track, gentle curves and gradual undulations makes for a fast course. The cool conditions were ideal with only a gentle head wind in Hangar Straight to inconvenience the runners. Over 1000 runners emerged from the Pit lane to toe the start line.

    First home for the Club was Neil Gregory who managed to dip under 40 minutes and finish in the top 200 runners. Meanwhile Club Treasurer Chris Clarke (recovering from his London Marathon exploits) and Chairman Nigel Bush were battling out the next club places. In the final half mile Chris’s neater line through Priory (and younger legs) just enabled him to finish in front. Debbie Knott, who is in training for a full IronMan event later in the year was next home, followed by new club member Karoly Juhasz. Penny Fletcher completed the sextet with a superb personal best.

    Results are as follows;

This was a multiterrain course compromised of numerous challenging hills, making this a particularly difficult 10k. Flitwick 10K - 10th April 2005

    Club runners were keen to get back onto the roads and racing again after their marshalling duties at the Sandy 10 the previous week. The Flitwick 10k last Sunday proved the ideal opportunity to blow away the cobwebs and post some fast times. This race also doubled up as the Club's 10km club championship race, as well as the Beds AAA championships, which made for a keenly contested event.

    First home for the Club was the fast improving Martyn Cole who dipped under 39 mins for the first time. Steve Chalk, now a Male Vet 50 was next, and Steve just pipped fellow 50+ vet Ian Skerratt to the Club’s 10km championship title (based on age-graded times). First lady home for the Club was Karen Worrall, who was 11th lady overall, won the Club’s 10km title, and was 2nd lady vet 40 in the Beds AAA championship.

    Mention should also be made of 10k debutants Natalie Darlow, Rebecca Tibbett and Paula Dawson who all ran superbly in their first 10km outings.

    Oakley 12 and 20 Mile Races - 20th March 2005

    The Oakley 20 mile race on Sunday 20th March provided an ideal test for four Club runners who are running the London Marathon in 3 weeks time. Fortunately the hot weather of the previous day was not repeated on Sunday, and the cool cloudy conditions were perfect for the 480 starters. First home for the Club and looking very relaxed, was Andy Bruce in a time of 2hrs 26mins. Fellow London Marathon entrant Gavin Elliott was not far behind in 2hrs 31mins despite suffering a recent series of injuries. Stamford 30K - 13th February 2005

    The Stamford Striders' St Valentine 30K Race (18.6 miles) is the flagship event organised by the Club. It is run each year on the Sunday closest to St Valentine’s Day (this year falling on Sunday 13th February). It is recognised nationally as a tough event, providing a good training run for those planning to run the Flora London Marathon and this year it lived up to its billing. Competitors traveled the length and breadth of the country to compete on the hilly, challenging course, taking in some of the nicest rural lanes of four of England most scenic counties: South Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.

    This year the strong winds battered all the competitors from the Club who made the journey to race in the very challenging event. Throughout the event all the competitors josseled for position to be the first Club member back into the warm. Gavin Elliott took the early lead with Alan Goodman then Chris Clarke both over taking him as conditions got worse. Chris then took up the running passing Alan strongly. With 7 kilometres to go Gavin decided to make a challenge for the lead and forced his way ahead of his team makes once again. In the mean time Zoe Dawson and Deb Bryant were both running strongly through the gust and Deb managed to pull ahead of Zoe and due to her grit and determination also managed to catch Alan who was flagging fast. All the athletes from the Club completed the course in reasonable times (considering the conditions)

    Three Counties XC (Wellingborough) - 6th February 2005

    The Club's senior ladies team showed what a dominate force they were on Sunday in the Three Counties Cross Country event held in Wellingborough. It was held on one of the most testing courses of this years league - a five and a half mile energy sapping hilly course with five water crossings and mud that stuck to you like jam. The experience of Karen Warrel obviously paid off as she lead the ladies home. The "ever green" Maria Tatchley and Jan Forrester also put in some tremendous performances battling for the line. The male team also performed well with outstanding running from both veteran runners Ken Prior and Neil Gregory.

    Due to this brilliant performance by all the ladies it has spring boarded them into 4th position in the league (the highest for the Club's Ladies Cross Country Team for an estimated 20 years). This then pulled the club's overall performance up to 6th place in the league for the whole season. Praise must not just go to the runners but also to the coaches and support team for an excellent season.

    Three Counties XC (Ampthill) - 9th January 2005

    The Club competed in the penultimate Three Counties Cross Country League race in Ampthill on Sunday. The course was one of the most tricky in the series. The race was contested on a 5 mile course with only half a mile on the flat. All Club runners coped very well with the undulating course. The ladies team was lead home by Karen Worrell who again put in an excellent performance to come in third. Deb Bryant also put in a superb performance nearly catching up her team mate Zoe Dawson for the first time this season - much to Zoe's disgust! But experience told when Zoe pulled away at the end of this very testing course. Tanya Tatchley and Jennifer Hutchings also put in good displays to round up an fantastic team display.

    The men's team put in another solid performance with Alan Broughton and Roy Stevens making the early running. Damien Pitts is now back to form after a disappointing run last month piping head coach Ken Prior on the line (Although Ken had raced the day before also). Gavin Elliott also ran well running the second half of the race faster than the first to calve his way through the field to gain some valuable points although he was disappointed with his position. Next month we travel to Wellingborough for the last race in league hoping to consolidate our mid table position.
