Alan Howes trained as a Transportation Engineer, and has spent 12 years in senior management positions in the bus and coach operating industry. For the last ten years he has been an independent consultant covering all aspects of transportation, but specialising in Public Transport Development. This includes the last four years spent working for bus operators in the Middle East. He has particular knowledge and expertise in intercity bus services, covering the UK and other countries.

Reasonable French, basic German, some Arabic, mostly forgotten Russian; but always happy to brush these up or learn a new language.

Providing support to this undertaking which operates around 200 buses in a fast-developing city, initially designed around unrestricted car use but now suffering increasing congestion. Particular projects (current) include:

Provided specialist advice on operational, marketing and organisational matters to the above company, which operates around 2,500 buses on international, inter-city and urban routes. Particular projects included:

1987 - 1991; Scottish Citylink Coaches Ltd (SCCL); (Managing Director)
ˇ Responsible for setting the company's strategic direction following the break-up of an important operating agreement.
ˇ Led the company's successful Management/Employee Buy-Out.
ˇ Responsible for various marketing strategy initiatives, including development of services to/from Glasgow Airport, generation of incoming tourism business, development of agency sales.
ˇ Participated in two Scottish Tourist Board-led sales missions to the USA, and one independent mission to Israel.
ˇ Responsible for management of Scotland's largest bus station (Buchanan, Glasgow). Also responsible for management of coach operators under contract to SCCL.
1983 - 1987; Midland Scottish Omnibuses Ltd (now Midland Bluebird); (Planning & Development Officer, then Operations Manager)
ˇ Responsible for completion of SCOTMAP Market Analysis Project (see below).
ˇ Oversaw the period of Bus Service Deregulation, developing a journey costing model which was successfully used to define the core network of commercial services.
ˇ Introduced Electronic Ticket Machines, evaluated Computerised Scheduling and improved management information systems.
ˇ Responsible for negotiations with Regional Council regarding Concessionary Fares, involving elasticity studies.

SCOTMAP Market Analysis Study
Managed the Scottish Bus Group Market Analysis Project (SCOTMAP) at the above company from planning, through surveys, analysis and design, to implementation. A major network-reshaping exercise aimed at reducing subsidy requirement and attracting new business.
1974 - 1979; Milton Keynes Development Corporation, Department of Engineering.
Involved in development of Public Transport in the New City, including the Woughton Dial-a-Bus scheme, justification of revenue support, infrastructure management and specification, fares policy etc. Involved in developing bus routes to serve the Central Milton Keynes shopping building.
1968 - 1974; Greater London Council, Department of Highways and Transportation.
Trained as Transportation Engineer, gaining experience of Transportation Modelling, Surveys, Road Safety Engineering and Accident Analysis, Bus Priority Studies, Traffic Restraint and Pedestrianisation. Worked on Supplementary Licensing Study (Road Pricing) and Oxford Street Pedestrianisation.
