Danny Cleavely's Picture Gallery.
Danny managed to get a few photos during his vacation to Fuerteventura. All of the pictures were taken with an Olympus AZ1. Danny tells me that the wreck is now looking very unstable, and it wouldn't surprise him if this is her last year. Her endurance is quite a tribute to the designers and construction team. Mother nature as always, wins in the end, and the ship has fought a valiant fight.
Danny said nothing can prepare you for what is, at first, a horrible, haunting sight. His wife visibly shivered when she first saw this wonderful old ship. It will always be a lasting memory. What amazed Danny most was just how close the wreck is to the shore.
At a low tide Danny imagined it would be very easy to climb up the ladder, though looking at the terrible condition of her now, he really wouldn't recommend doing this. If you look through the missing section in her bows, it looks as if the decks are collapsing inside. The view taken of her "sea-side" (port) show that there is very little holding the structure upright now.
Danny mentioned that he wished he had been able to see the ship when it was a proud cruise liner. He felt quite emotional at viewing the wreck, and hopes that the photos are not too depressing for all those who knew her in her hey-day.

Many thanks to Danny Cleavely for his contribution to the site.
This page was designed by: Ken Ironside.
Due to a huge volume of questions I am asked, for which often I do not have the information, I have decided to ask that only ex-crew actually write to me please.
I am delighted with everyones contributions, and will occasionally update the Australis web site, using photos/stories etc sent to me. However I cannot answer any more questions.
Thankyou for your sustained interest in the SS Australis Homepage.
