A new organisation, known as the Friends of St Margaret’s, is being set up and will apply for charitable status as soon as possible. This will help us to obtain various grants towards the restoration work. Meanwhile, a very varied programme of events is being drawn up with the idea of having fun whilst making a start on our mammoth fund raising effort. Any donations or offers of help will be warmly welcomed. Christmas Tree fit for Trafalgar Square?
The two questions asked as St Margaret's was being decorated were “Why did no one think to out the star on the top before the tree was out up?” and “How is Michael Fraser-Allen (who organised the tree) going to follow that next year?” With a long ladder, great fun was had in decorating the tree along with the rest of the Church. Sustained by mince pies, mulled wine, coffee and soft drinks there was a Christmas workshop at the same time. Do have a look for the Church’s visiting angel. ST MARGARET’S CHURCH There has been a church on the site of St Margaret’s since about 700AD, when the first Saxon church was built beside the ancient road which went from Oxford to Leicester.
Many generations have worshipped there and enjoyed the beauty and peace of the present building, much of which dates from the late 12th/early 13th century. Sadly, these days, for many people regular worship has come to mean every Christmas and/or Easter. Meanwhile, the fabric of the building is in urgent need of repair. The stonework of the tower is crumbling and five of the windows are in such a poor state that, without remedial action, they will soon have to be boarded up. An estimated £500,000 is needed to restore the church and this is a very daunting prosect for the worshippers. |
