The "Hall" Class locomotives were the most numerous and arguably the most popular of Great Western 4-6-0 designs. Over two hundred and fifty of this versatile and practical locomotive were produced.

The story of
Great Western 4-6-0's
begins in 1907 with the
"Star Class".

These were the forerunners of all the mainline express locos used up to the end of the Great Western era. During the 1920's a need developed for a light axle load 4-6-0, hence the 'Saints' and 'Halls' were produced. The 'Hall' was the larger of the two, fitted with 6ft diameter driving wheels. These engines were capable of handling all but the largest of the Great Western express trains, these duties being rostered to the "Castle Class", along with the longer and larger "Kings", which were built as improved versions from 1922 onwards.

THE MODEL

The BRAMHURST mainline model is a faithful reproduction of a 'Modified Hall'. We chose
"Burton Agnes Hall"
now in preservation, and one of the batches of seventy odd locomotives built from 1944 onwards.

This loco with its extended frames round the smokebox saddle and the plate frame bogie, is a detailed replica, and represents model engineering at its best, capturing the atmosphere and character of the Great Western Railway in its hey day.

We have incorporated a wealth of innovative design features to aid the running, maintenance and ease of kit building. Although representing times past, we have taken advantage of the most up to date, accurate techniques to produce components for the kit. Processes such as computer aided design and machining, laser and precision abrasive waterjet cutting have been used where appropriate, however there still remains many items manufactured using traditional model engineering hand made methods.

What is "fully machined"? - Well it means exactly that.

In every BRAMHURST mainline kit, all the machining will be completed prior to despatch, and in some instances additional quality checks are implemented when working parts are pre-assembled to ensure "fit" where necessary. For example all wheels, axles and axle-boxes are preassembled, valve eccentrics fitted and wheels quartered, with other parts such as lubricator, regulator and pipework supplied complete.

The fully machined kit is designed for assembly using hand tools only. There is much for the kit builder to do by way of finishing that may include hand drilling, filing, fitting and of course painting. We present a model that includes all the characteristics of a Great Western locomotive by including many fine detail parts, in both brass lost wax and resin moulded castings, but however, acknowledge the builder may wish to add further super detailing.

The first stages of the kit are the tender, which gently introduces you to the project, followed by the locomotive, more complex but never the less straightforward to build.

The 5" gauge "Hall" is manufactured in 10 separate stages and can be purchased in either 10 or 20 stages to allow the cost to be spread over a longer period.
