On the remote west side of Shetland you can find spectacular scenery, peace, and the ideal refuge for the escapist. Twenty seven miles out of Lerwick, on a promontory facing the island of Vaila, stands the eighteenth-century house of Burrastow (location map).
Burrastow is a perfect retreat in the days of Shetland's short, brilliant summer, it's comfort and beauty make it an attractive place to come for a seasonal break.
Burrastow has been a guest house from 1980 with a double and family room both en-suite. Harry and Stella Tuckey converted the house and ran it for 8 years or so until they decided to retire. Burrastow House was sold to Ann Prior and Bo Simmons in 1988. Bo Simmons put her own stamp on the property and increased the dining capacity. The popularity of the establishment grew. Ann then wanted to travel more and she sold her share to Bo's husband, Henry. Ten years ago, increasing demand persuaded them to add a further 3 en-suite bedrooms, more dining capacity and facilities for workshops and conferences. The extension was completed in 1995. Burrastow House can sleep a maximum of 12 and sit 20 people for dinner. ![]() For those of you who have discovered Burrastow House, Welcome. For those needing to find us, drive out to Walls, straight up the hill, bear left and follow the road for about 2 miles to the very end and there we are. Ready and waiting to assist in any way we can. Burrastow is the ideal place to come for one of those "get away from it all" holidays. Our location offers great walking and wildlife. Our food is not the kind that lies on a bed of something, with something else in it, round it, on top of it and finally something incompatible drizzled over it! We prefer to use fine fresh ingredients, simply cooked with uncomplicated sauces that enhance or compliment the natural favours. The cuisine at Burrastow run by Bo was featured in the television series "Scotland's Larder", read what the series producer, Michael Marshall, has to say about Burrastow House. |

Otters and seals may be seen from the windows and wild orchids flourish in the grounds. The house welcomes you with peat fires, a cosy library and all the marvellous food you could want after a day's exploring. There is a conference facility for up to 25 and workshop space for regular summer workshops.
Burrastow has access to a boat available to take residents off to explore Vaila Sound. There is excellent fishing, windsurfing and sea-angling available in the area. There is a shop, post office and swimming pool two miles away in Walls, which has a bus service to Lerwick every day except Sundays. Children are catered for and some pets are welcome. |

The proprietor Pierre is an enthusiastic cook. Bread, including croissants for breakfast if you stay overnight, is home-baked. Shetland produce is some of the best anywhere. Fish so fresh and a wide variety, halibut, turbot, crab, lobster, sea trout, salmon, cod, squid, haddock, mackerel, mussels, smoked fish and so on. You may even have the chance to fish for some of it yourselves. Lamb from the "toons" or the hills, heather fed and succulent. We use local lamb. Almost 100% organic and natural. Locally raised beef, young, tender and no risk of BSE! Pork, again locally raised and lovingly cared for. Fresh salad stuffs and vegetables, much of it from our own garden. Locally produced cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, herbs, etc, the list is endless, the quality great. We enjoy using them and we hope you enjoy tasting them.
