ElectricEds@bigfoot.com
The Grapevine mailing list was started in August 1996 by the Society
of Freelance Editors and Proofreaders as a
discussion forum for people working with computers within the UK publishing
industry. It is now an independent mailing list run by the Electric Editors.
As with EDline, Grapevine has grown in popularity, and is now
available to
editors, proofreaders, indexers, translators, writers and typesetters.
Please note: the views expressed and techniques recommended in
Grapevine are strictly those of the individual
contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or
the Electric Editors.
What is Grapevine?
Grapevine is concerned with computer-related issues. Editorial matters,
including questions relating to
the editing of computer books, are covered by EDline, the editorial mailing
list.
Grapevine is available as both an automated list, with messages forwarded to
you as soon as they are received, and as a weekly digest.
The Grapevine mailing list is open only to members of the Electric
Editors,
so you won't be troubled by any junk emails. The list is
moderated, so you can be sure that none of the Internet's notorious
'flame wars' will break out.
Subscriptions
It costs nothing to subscribe to Grapevine, or to either of the other
two Electric Editors' mailing lists, EDline and LANGline.
To subscribe to Grapevine you have several options.
If you'd like to read Grapevine messages as they are posted, simply type your
e-mail address into the box below and click on the 'Join List' button.
If that doesn't work for any reason, then either send a blank e-mail to
ee_grapevine-subscribe@listbot.com, or send a
message to ElectricEds@bigfoot.com as
described above EDline or LANGline, asking for an automated subscription.
If you would prefer to read Grapevine as a weekly digest, send an
e-mail to ElectricEds@bigfoot.com
with "Subscribe [Grapevine digest]" as the subject line
For more information on how to join the Electric Editors and to
subscribe to our other mailing lists, please see the Mailing list Web
page.
We would like to stress that Grapevine, like the Electric Editors, is
free: no money, no passwords,
just useful information from professional editors around the
globe.
Posting messages to
Grapevine
If you subscribe to the automated version of Grapevine, messages should be sent to:
ee_grapevine@listbot.com
If you subscribe to the digest version of Grapevine, messages should be sent to
ee_grapevine@ikingston.demon.co.uk
These messages will also be forwarded to the automated list.
Messages should be pertinent
to the basic premise of the list; they may be withheld, or redirected
if more pertinent to one of the other mailing lists.
The spelling and grammar of messages will not be corrected, but
some
editing of length may be undertaken.
Quoting from previous messages: quote as much as you need to make the
context of your reply clear, but no more.
Messages should be chopped up and the contents placed under different
headings. We shall use your headings if supplied; otherwise we'll dream up
something totally inappropriate.
Please do not attack other subscribers no matter how stupid and
wrongheaded they may appear. Contumely will be rigorously
excised.
Administration
All messages of a subscription or administrative nature should be
directed to the Electric Editors' e-mail address:
ElectricEds@bigfoot.com
with the subject line "Grapevine ADMIN".
Resources
A full list of links that appear in Grapevine is available from the
Electric Editors' Resources Pages. Resources relating specifically to computers and computing are available on the Grapevine Page
The Electric Editors' Resources Pages are updated with new URLs on a
regular basis.
Back issues
All back issues of Grapevine will be available from
the
Electric Editors' Archives. These archives contain the Grapevine digests.
You can also view the
ListBot archive of Grapevine messages posted since 14 December 1999,
when the automated version was set up.
Please note that back issues of Grapevine originally published by the Society
of Freelance Editors
and Proofreaders are only available to members of the Society.
We are sure you will find Grapevine most useful.
