Seventeen RAF cadets, accompanied by Mr Millar, set
off from Clarendon Dock on Saturday 27 June full of anticipation at the
exciting prospect of a week's camp at a very busy front-line RAF Station.
Leuchars is an F3 Tornado Base and is one of the few remaining RAF Stations which still operates on a 'quick action alert' category and as such it is a very business-like and efficient place to visit.
The Campbell cadets joined with those from three other schools. During
the week all boys were subject to the discipline of the station and went
through a comprehensive training programme which included Air Experience
Flying in the Bulldog aircraft - the RAF's basic trainer for all pilots;
shooting where all Campbell cadets were commended for their efficiency and
expertise on the range; drill; work experience; visiting various sections
on the station; map reading and hill walking. It is worth noting here that
a group of cadets, led by David Bell, 'discovered' at the end of their trek
a delightful little coffee shop which served up the most delicious chocolate
flavoured coffee served in huge mugs with oodles of fresh cream on top.
David unselfishly
introduced this member of staff to the
same delight! An excellent visit was to HMS Discovery in Dundee. 'Discovery'
was the ship used by Captain Scott for his Antarctic expedition.
Because of the fine weather most evenings were spent on the sports field. The bowling alley was a venue on two evenings and a night exercise playing 'Monopoly' with a difference was enjoyed by all.
It is my pleasure to report that all Campbell cadets demonstrated exemplary conduct throughout the week and the only one to be singled out is again David Bell who shared the prize for the best kept room. (I hope his mum reads this!)
Food, transport and accommodation were excellent and all returned home at the end of the week with much of the initial anticipation well satisfied.
My thanks to all boys for their good behaviour and conduct, they were indeed a credit to the school. A special thanks to the senior cadets: Alan Millar, Conor Bailey, Neil Hall and Robert Agnew who kept everything under control. A final 'thank-you' to Mr Millar for his encouragement and support throughout the week.
AD Boyd
