Adobe Distil

I spent a while searching SunWeb on the keyword 'distill'. There are several pages of information, but nothing on the syntax. There may something on http://dcs.central

ATT remote access

Question: Why soo... slow?
Answer: Everyone accepts that it not the best solution, the idea is fine but the network lets it down. A solution voiced by my 'manager' was to select the server situated in the country that was 'asleep' i.e.. if you want to work in the evening, select the Far East and in the morning, select the US. Not a brilliant method, but it should 'up' the speed.

ENS support for Remote users

This new service has been outsourced to Xerox in the east coast of the US, hence why I could not find Chris Verbanic (00 1 513 672 7929) in Nametool. Chris is the leader of the group.

The group charter is to provide full laptop and windows support to Sun staff. To gain contact, call ext. 15555 and select 2 when asked by the 'computer voice'.

There was a reference to the group at:http://sunit.europe/Information/MobileComputing/SupportInformation/index.html and a more general site at: http://sunit.europe/Information/MobileComputing/index.html.

Laptop ethernet connection to office.

If the user is working from Guillemont Park they will be able to print to network printers and also when they plugin, an H: drive will appear on windows explorer which will have the contents of their file manager.

A full description of how this is managed, is on the following site: http://suntvc.uk/help/laptop

If they are not working at Guillemont Park it is a bit harder. OK to setup the laptop to connect to SWAN, follow as below:

Start Button->Settings->Control Panel->Network
Change Primary Network Logon to "Windows Logon"
Then select the TCP/IP component that is connected to the ethernet card, i.e.- TCP/IP-> Xircom CardBus Ethernet 100+modem 56
Once this is highlighted click on properties
IP Address - "Obtain an IP address automatically"
NetBIOS - NA
WINS Configuration - "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution"
Advanced - NA
Gateway - NA
Bindings - NA
DNA Configuration - "Disable DNS"
Then click on OK twice to go back to the Control Panel

You will then be prompted to restart the computer, click yes The laptop is now configured for the network. But keep in mind the port that they use to connect the laptop, must be patched in. If it is not they need to log a Service desk ticket to get the port connected.

Laptop - Print screen

The 'prtsc' key fails to capture a screen image. I had the same problem until I realised the key is used 'unshifted' even though it appears in the shifted position on the keycap. When pressed the screen image is saved to the clipboard and can be pasted into say StarOffice/image editor

PalmPilot integration

In the notes (page 110) reference is made to http://eggman.central/pilot/index.html, but in the past, the site has been down. Another site is http://ten-forward.east.sun.com/~rrizzo/palmtop.html. This page describes how to modify the user profile to allow synchronisation between the CDE tools and the Palm. It depends upon which version of Solaris you are using. Version 7 (2.7) requires a downloaded file to be run, while version 8 (2.8) has full support built in. In addition, it should be noted that searching the web base with a keyword of 'pilot' may not produce the same results as 'palm'!

What is qw?

Typing 'qw firstname.lastname' will inform you where the person is if they are using a SunRay.

It appears to work in TVC, but trying at WMP II, left the program in a continuous search loop. It will give the location of the person concerned.

Outlook Express in Sun.

You can use other mail clients through sun.net. To do this you need to use net tunnel. Explanations are on Sun.net on how to set this up.

While connected up internally it is possible to Netscapecape mail but this is not supported at the moment andon'tdont know how to set this up. But some time next year we are possibly movingNetscapecape mail instead of dtmail??

I think it highly unlikely we will be able to use outlook express inside of SWAN for obvious (Microsoft) reasons.

StarOffice translations

Yes, people do have trouble converting incoming MS Office documents to StarOffice; Powerpoint presentations will completely hang, even simple ones. http://dcs.central, might help and all I can suggest, is to look at the StarOffice web pages from www.sun.com.

Return to index Well folks, that is the best I can do for now. Any feedback would be appreciated.
