Stephen Day Battles for By-Pass
Stephen Day says "If extra money is available for roads I want it here in Cheadle and Hazel Grove for our local by-passes. The current so-called 'multi-modal transport study' - which will decide the fate of the western MAELR link to the Airport, the Poynton by-pass eastern link and the A6M Hazel Grove by-pass - must report quickly and in favour of completion so that we have a chance of benefiting from the Secretary of State's statement. I am delighted that the survey of local people shows an overwhelming majority in favour of these by-passes. We need the completion of our road system if we are ever to clear our village centres of traffic hold-ups."
Stephen says "Stockport receives less money per pupil than most in other areas. The sum is arrived at by a complicated standard assessment, and whilst we are a prosperous borough when compared to many, the disparity in funding is too great.

The local Liberal Democrats spend too much time complaining about Stockport's poor grant and little time doing anything practical about it. It is almost as if they like having a stick to beat the other parties with. We need to go forward with everyone working together to try to improve things locally. In Parliament I have made a start."

Stephen Day is embarking on a consultation with pensioners in his Cheadle constituency. He will be visiting sheltered accommodation and elderly people's flats to find out their concerns.
Others are invited to write to Stephen to let him know
their opinions. Stephen Day believes that our senior citizens have been
particularly overlooked by this Labour Government.
Stephen said recently " The 75p pension increase was nothing less than an insult. The Government's tax raid on private pension schemes was an outrage. A stealth tax of the worst sort!
Pensioners as a group rarely complain, even when they have much to complain about. I want to hear their concerns so that they can be passed on."
