In the care of English Heritage, who describe it as "The greatest mystery of the prehistoric world", Stonehenge has attracted visitors since its "completion" some 3500 years ago. If you thought the builders were a long time with your house extension, remember the start date for Stonehenge was another 1500 years before that. There are numerous theories as to what and why, ranging from the credible to the bizarre. For me Stonehenge just is. I'll give you the bare details, just go there! |
Visitor facilities are basic as far as accommodation is concerned but the Audio Tour available in seven languages is excellent. There is no close access to the stones, visitors must keep to a path which circles the stones from several yards away. Even on a cold wet day in November there will always be someone to walk across the front of your camera so be patient ! The size of the stones will amaze you look at the figures in the bottom photograph. |
The most popular tourist attraction in the country and as far as public transport at least is concerned, possibly the most inaccessible, Stonehenge is well worth the extra effort needed to visit it. Nearest railway Station is Salisbury, followed by a ten mile bus ride. Buses are hourly. Nearest town with National Express coach travel is Amesbury (3 per day) Amesbury to Stonehenge can be walked (2 miles) or by local hire car. Travel to Amesbury by coach can only be reasonably achieved from London. If you do not have your own car probably the best option is one of the many coach tours, contact the Tourist Information Centre, or by hire car. |
