I started to do embroidery when I was at school working cross stitch on gingham, and this has had a revival as seen in a recent copy of the magazine WORKBOX. Luckily, at all the schools that I attended I had teachers who encouraged hand crafts, and as with my knitting, I saw these being done at home. There are many different kinds of embroidery such as
and many more, including sewing beads. My favourite embroidery is CROSS-STITCH, and although it is easy to do you can get many interesting effects with this simple stitch. I worked a HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTOR BIKE picture for my husband on 18 count aida and my FAMILY COAT OF ARMS (plus immediate members of my family) as a present for one of my brothers. There are many magazines for embroidery and cross stich and also quite a few dedicated computer CD packages devoted to this craft. |

As with all my other hobbies I saw sewing being carried out from an early age at home. This was done because clothes were expensive and my mother and grandmother were both very good seamstresses. Again, as with embroidery, I started making clothes at school for myself and then when the children came along they were the recipients of my labours! There are so any beautiful materials to be bought and so many easy to follow patterns that it is a shame that a lot of schools do not have time to teach these skills, and many children do not see them carried out in the home. It seems that it is cheaper to buy than to make. Visit our CRAFTS & SOFTWEAR SALES page to see our new exclusive victorian stools and cushions made in velvet or fabric of choice. Also many other items including Water-Soluble Fabric etc. |
