There are many very good books to be read on the subjects and I have already got more of these than I can possibly read. From watching TV programmes and reading, it seems that Patchwork and Quilting have been around for hundreds of years at least, fragments having been found in graves during archeological digs. In early times it was done out of necessity, using the best pieces of worn out clothes to make clothes and bed drapes. Nowadays this craft is carried out using new material to make household items. I was amazed to find very large 3 storey shops in America devoted just to Patchwork and Quilting and had I had a small fortune then it would have had a serious dent in it! Recently I have joined the WINDMILL QUILTERS, a new group being held at the WINDMILL KNITTING CENTRE, Herstmonceux, Nr Hailsham in East Sussex. We are working our way through the basics and Sandra, our tutor, is very patient as we strive towards perfection. ,So far we have quilted a bag to carry our equipment, a log cabin cushion cover and an heirloom advent calender for our grandchildren. Last week we started on to tucks, mitred corners and centre piece triangle shaped pockets. I have found many good links to Patchwork and Quilting sites and hope you enjoy them to. If you find some others that would be of interest then please Email us and we will include them. As with all my craft interests, I feel that they must be
passed on to the next generation and not lost. It was lovely to have a
show put on by the OUSE VALLEY QUILTERS at one of our local attractions, BENTLEY
WILDFOWL, and I hope you enjoy seeing some of the beautiful work that they
have produced below:-. |

| The
'OUSE VALLEY QUILTERS' is a group now in it's sixth year of existence. It
has members throughout the Ouse Valley area (Seaford and along the coast
to Brighton, Lewes and the villages north of Lewes, plus Haywards Heath)
who meet all together every three months for evening lectures by
experienced quiltmakers and specialists in such associated subjects such
as fabric design, heritage quilts and sewing aids or social events. But
the most popular aspect of being an 'Ouse Valley Quilter' is belonging to
one of the small sub-groups which meet either fortnightly or
monthly. These sub-groups have between 8 - 12 members who (according
to the size of the group) met in members' homes or hired accommodation to
spend a sociable two hours exchanging skills and tips, learning new
techniques or just sewing and chatting. The Group also involves
itself in charitable projects from time to time and in previous years has
made over 60 small quilts for a children's ward in a hospital in Ethiopia
and 22 bed quilts for a training school for blind boys in Malawi.
The above exhibition at Bentley is the second exhibition of members' work and is part of Artwave - the Visual Arts Festival for Lewes District. If you would like more information before becoming a member please contact the Treasurer:- Susie Dakers, 9 Belle Vue Gardens, Brighton, BN1 2AA. Tel:- 01273 695948 The annual subscription is £10 which runs from 1st October each year and entitles members to free attendance at the evening lectures and social events. Those who wish to join the Group can send a cheque, payable to 'Ouse Valley Quilters', to the Treasurer. Non-members can attend the lectures and pay £3 at the door. In addition members pay a contribution to the sub-group meeting expenses when they attend. |
