What's happened so far?
Just a few figures to give you some idea: over 2150 collections and approaching 2600 deliveries to families or individuals, which translates into nearly 7300 individual items delivered. We need to remember that these figures represent people who have been enabled to move into empty properties quickly, families able to upgrade worn out items, and young single people provided with a start in their first flat as they leave institutions of various kinds.
Our area of coverage seems to go on extending, from the Coventry area we go out northerly to Bedworth, Bulkington and Nuneaton and southwards down to Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth, although the southern route, as you might imagine, is predominantly for collections. 88% of our work has been in Coventry and 12% in Warwickshire.
Working relationships have been formed with various agencies and social landlords such as Whitefriars Housing, Valley Housing and Coventry Cyrenians. We get referrals from both Coventry Social Services and Warwickshire Social Services as well as Coventry Refugee Centre.
Overview of Primary Use
The project involves the recycling of good quality second-hand furniture and white goods to people in
need, for which they pay a small handling charge. Access to the goods will only be facilitated upon
presentation of a benefit book or by specific referral from appropriate sources, for example, statuary
agencies, social landlords, charities, voluntary groups, etc.
The project has been in operation since June 2002, collecting donated
items of good quality second hand furniture and household electrical
goods. The aims of the project therefore are able to tackle deprivation
and improve the quality of life of people living in disadvantaged
communities and thereby also bring about a reduction inn the amount of
furniture and household electrical items being disposed of in municipal
waste sites and a reduction in the amount of fly tipping in the areas in which we operate.
Collections are made from all over Coventry wards and about 15% of our work takes place in small towns and rural areas in Warwickshire within approximately an 8 mile radius of Coventry. From our research of existing recyclers in Coventry prior to the start of this project in 2002 we estimated that only 30% of the need was being met. Even at our current level of work, we are still not meeting current demand.
The Turnaround Furniture Project has already established a proven track record of consistently meeting people's need for affordable furniture.
We have a need of volunteers to work on delivery of goods - We can also provide Work experience positions and relevant training.
We are always glad to receive donations of items. Just contact us on the above telephone number.
