Rawshooter doesn't accept RAW files from the new Nikon D40 camera. If, like me, you regret the passing of Rawshooter, this little program might be just the thing. The new Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 does include D40.

D40 and D70 file formats are similar except that bytes 339-341 of the D40 file spell "D40" and in the D70 file spell "D70". If the name is respelt to D70, Rawshooter will accept the D40 files.

You can change the bytes in a hex editor, or download this simple program to do the same. It has no airs or graces - you choose the drive and folder where you want it to search for NEF files, and it converts any D40 files to D70. Back up your files in case something goes wrong - no warranties of any kind are given. But, it has not caused any trouble for me.

There is one side-effect: the thumbnail is black (colour temperature zero). In "Correct" mode, click on "Estmate white balance" (top right) and work from there.
