Part 2. MOVEMENTS OF DITCHBURNS THROUGH THE YEARS.
Early movements of Ditchburns were chiefly from Northumberland to County Durham. The numbers of births in these two counties in my records from the 1600s to the 1900s were as follows:-
| Century | Northumberland Births | Durham Births |
| 1600s | 69 | 16 |
| 1700s | 224 | 69 |
| 1800s | 424 | 420 |
| 1900s | 243 | 485 |
| Totals | 960 | 990 |
During the latter part of the twentieth century the number of births in Northumberland fell rapidly especially during the northern part of the county.
During the 1700s movement from Northumberland probably occurred to Scotland, especially to Fifeshire. Later movement was firstly to Yorkshire and Cumberland. Further movement to the South of England was mainly in the 1900s. The most recent distribution of Ditchburns within Great Britain in my possession is provided by the Electoral Roll of 2002. This excludes childrens under 17 years old and also those who did not register.

Migration outwith the British Isles was almost entirely to English-speaking countries. A significant migration occurred to Australia in the Mid-1800s at the time of the Gold-rush in the State of Victoria.
