The meaning of 'Main' at the top of this tree is unclear. The first Ralph of Ditchburn is recorded as 'Son of Main'. These were Norman times and it is possible that the family originated in the French region of Maine et Loire in western France.
Notes on the dating:- The first Ralph of Ditchburn endowed a chapel with the consent of his wife and son in the middle of the 12th century.
Ralph III paid to change to 'Knightly service' in 1200.
Ralph IV gave over the property of Ditchburn to his son in 1294; he gave his mills at North Charlton to William de Vesci in 1295.
Other notes:- Ralph IV is also recorded as owning lands at Togston,Ryle and Carlington.
There are records of a Germanis de Ditchburn of Beadnell. He and his wife took out a lawsuit together in 1269. He could be a younger brother of Roger Ist of Ditchburn.

In 1801 the census returns recorded 87 people living at the Ditchburn farms; by 1821 the population had increased to 97 people; there followed a steady decrease in numbers; by 1911 there were only 32 people living at Ditchburn.
