February 1997

Congratulations to club Treasurer Peter Redshaw on his selection to fish for Scotland in the forthcoming Home Nations Boat event which is to be fished out of Scrabster in May.

During the first weekend in February four porbeagles were taken by anglers out of Scrabster. Unfortunately all were killed on the dubious excuse that the money from the sale was going to the life boat. While I can appreciate that an angler wants to get pictures of their catch if things continue in this manner commercial fisherman will start to get involved and before long the run of fish at Scrabster will be wiped out as happened in the Shetlands.

The club fished on Sunday 27th out of Scrabster with John Sinclair on the Sunrise.

The weather was excellent but the fishing was patchy. Some nice cod averaging 3-5 lb along with some early ballans and sea scorpions made up the bulk of the catches. Most of the fish came on the ebb tide off the point of Brimms. Most anglers fished single hook as a practice for the open competition in two weeks time. Best baits were mussel with either lug or rag.

Club Treasurer, Peter Redshaw won the boat with fish, species and species points to take the first leg of the club league championship.

Next month sees the Home Internationals being fished out of Scrabster with teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales taking part.

May 1997

The first week of the month sees feverish bait collecting activity as club members prepare for the Caithness Open Boat Competition on the 10th and 11th of this month. Up to now the club has not had the best of reults in our own competition but hopefully this will change this year.

The entries for this year are down on the past few years, possibly due to the increasing costs of competitions, but the entrants still include most of Scotland's top rods and all of this season's internationalists.
