The Slave Trade is the third volume in the new  Canterbury Sources series which is intended to give access to the wide range of printed and manuscript sources in the Archives and Library at Canterbury Cathedral or to present other historical material relating to Canterbury.

Much of the material for this book comes from the library of Sir Robert Harry Inglis (1786–1855), M.P. for the University of Oxford, who was an active member in the various bodies which campaigned for a world-wide ban on the slave trade. His collections came to the Cathedral through Archdeacon Benjamin Harrison who was himself connected in his Oxford days to W.E. Gladstone and who tehn served as Chaplain to Archbishop Howley, some of whose books are also  represented in the Catalogue.

The materials range in date from the mid-eighteenth century until Inglis's death, with a few later pieces. As well as items published in London, there are items from the English provinces, from North America and particularly from the West Indies, as well as a small amount of French material.

Originally published from typewriting in 1988 under the title of Slavery, the Catalogue has been extensively revised and augmented. There is a general index, an index of former owners, and an index of printing towns other than London. The Historical Introduction which has been specially commissioned for the series is by David Turley, a specialist in American History at the University of Kent at Canterbury.
