DERMOTS' SONGS

In the eighties, as well as pursuing his comic career, Dermot also made records and had a number of singles released with humorous songs of his own composition.

Some of these song titles from the Eighties:

Alsatian Once Again

The Taoiseach's Lament,

Get Out of That Saddle , Stephen,

Daddy's in Deutchland

The last two refer to Irish teams participation in contemporary sporting events (Tour de France and Soccer).

In 1986 Dermot had a Number One Hit in Ireland with "Thank you very much Mr Eastwood". This was a song about the boxing champion, Barry McGuigan, notorious for his modesty and for perpetually thanking his manager. In the course of the song various personalities appear to praise the champion. However he resolutely declines to accept this homage and instead makes them thank and honour his manager, Mr Eastwood. This they all do in turn.

In order of appearance we have Barry McGuigan, President Reagan, Bob Geldof and Pope John Paul. Dermot, naturally, impersonates them all beautifully (and not only vocally, since he also performs as each one of them on the British TV video of this song.)

The lyrics (in part)

Barry McGuigan: ..So I'm saying thank you, thank you, thank you very, very much Mr Eastwood. Thanks mum, and dad, and my brothers and sister, But the man I thank most is the man I call Mister. Mr Eastwood. Thank you very, very, very much Mr Eastwood. Thank you very, very, very much Mr Eastwood. So I took off my gloves and Ieaned on the rope, thanking the audience. And I picked up the phone, who was there but the Pope.

Pope: Young Barry, I love you and I thank God that you are so good.

Barry McGuigan: Don't thank him your Holiness, thank Mr Eastwood.

Pope: So we say thank you, thank you, thank you very much Mr Eastwood. Thanks mum, and dad, and his brothers and his sister, But the man he thanks most is the man he calls Mister.

Barry McGuigan: (thank you your Holiness) Thanks to Sandra and to Blaine they're a bonus and thanks to the fans here and the ones back in Clones. ...................................
