Branch Chairman Patrick Nethercot has been presented with an award for voluntary service.

The William Brooks Awards are presented annually by the Alzheimer's Society at its AGM, held this year at Warwick University.

The award commemorates William Brooks and is presented by his son Paul Brooks at the annual dinner during the AGM weekend. It came as a surprise to Patrick who when he first got the email while away on holiday thought was either a prank or a scam, but then he discovered he had been nominated by staff and volunteers at the Durham and Chester-le-Street branch.

Patrick expressed his surprise,

"I was surprised and gratified to be nominated. But I know that there are many other volunteers just within this area that have worked tirelessly for years without this recognition and whom I feel are much more deserving. All I have done is represented the branch and Alzheimer's Society to other organisations and bodies and raise awareness of dementia where I can. This is not possible without the hard work and dedication of many others, staff and volunteers alike."

The day of the annual dinner and presentation turned out to be quite an adventure for Patrick and his wife Christine involving a broken gearbox, a car hijacking, ten hours on the road and a last minute arrival - but that's another story!
