The branch held its Annual General Meeting at the Parish Centre in Chester-le-Street on 21 May 1998. The meeting was well attended and present were the Mayor of Durham Cllr Derek Young and the Deputy Chairman (soon to be Chairman) of Chester-le-Street District Council, Cllr John Lines.

Reports were given by Jennifer Brown and Debbie Keenan which demonstrated the huge amount of work done by the branch for clients and their carers over the previous year. There was also a financial report which showed that the branch remains solvent! The work of the many volunteers and friends of the branch was noted and tanks rendered.

The present officers and committee were re-elected and thanked for their service.

A very interesting talk was given by the guest speaker, Dr. John Woodhouse, who runs the Durham Area Health Authority. The demographic increase in Alzheimers and other dementias which may be expected was illustrated by clear charts on an OHP and he also outlined the authority's dilemma when faced with new treatments and how decisions were arrived at over such cases for example, Aricept.
