Reports were given by Jennifer Brown and Debbie Keenan which once more demonstrated the huge amount of work done by the branch for clients and their carers over the previous year. There was also a financial report from Steve Allen which showed that the branch remains just about solvent, thanks the fund-raising efforts of so many, as well as the continued support of Durham County Council. For the fifth year in sucession, there were no questions, so thorough was the report. He has vowed to stay as Treasurer at least until there is a question! The work of the many volunteers and friends of the branch was noted and thanks rendered.

The meeting was also addressed by Mark Walker, Regional Officer for the Alzheimer's Disease Society, in which he paid tribute the hard work done by the branch, staff and committee, not just over the past year, but since the branch's beginnings ten years ago with little more than one desk and a typewriter. What a long way the branch has come in those years!

After ten years of service, the Chair of the branch, Councillor Sheila Hubbard had decided not to stand for re-election. One nomination for the post of Chairman was received, and Patrick Nethercot was elected Chair of the branch for the coming year. The remaining officers and committee were re-elected and thanked for their service.

New College Durham students had made Alzheimer's one of their targets for their annual Rag Week, with the result that a small delegation arrived with a cheque to the branch for £900.00! As a token of the branch's thanks, they were in turn presented with a Certificate of Achievement.

Our guest speaker was Professor Raj Kalaria, professor of Cerebrovascular Pathology at the Institute for the Health of the Elderly, Newcastle. His illustrated talk was entitled "Current Advances in Basic and Clinical Aspects of Alzheimer's Disease".

The scale of the problem!

The scale of the problem!

Professor Kalaria's work is much involved with the pathology of former sufferers' brains, so you can imagine what some of the illustrations were like. It was a wide ranging talk, covering the latest research into genetic influences but principally the link appearing between Alzheimer's Disease and cardiovascular disorders, the message being, keep fit generally. If it's good for the heart, it's also good for the brain.
