July it was, July weather it wasn't, or not what we had hoped for. The morning started fine enough, but as the table was set out in Market Square, the skies darkened, and at the appointed time, down came the rain. Foresight, and distrust of English weather, ensured plastic sheeting was available.
The guest of honour, the Deputy Mayor of Durham, Councillor Margaret Adair arrived in good time for the church service, a time of quiet prayer and remembrance.
Back outside, the rain had eased, but the wind proved a problem for lighting the candles - lighters had trouble staying alight, never mind the candles. The Northern Echo's photographer's attentions couldn't even produce a lasting flame!
