An analysis of calls shows a huge rise in callers contacting the Alzheimer's Society because of concern that they may be suffering from early signs of dementia.
By the end of 2000, these calls will have increased by 300% from 1997 figures. This is due to increased public awareness, early diagnosis and an increased willingness to discuss Alzheimer's disease, often regarded as a taboo subject.
Commenting on the figure, Harry Cayton, Chief Executive, said:
'I am delighted that we are able to help so many people. This news shows that we are now reaching many more people directly affected by dementia. The helpline is a very important resource for many people with dementia and carers.'The local rate helpline is staffed Monday - Friday from 8.30am to 6.30pm. The number is 0845 300 0336. The helpline gives information and advice on Alzheimer’s disease and all forms of dementia.
