Early onset dementia is a term that covers a range of diseases affecting memory and thinking in people under the age of 65. This group have important medical and social needs that in the past have not always been met. In the U.K. at least 17,000 people are thought to be affected by early onset dementia.
Dementia does not simply affect the patient. It profoundly changes the lives of those family members and friends who are close to them. When someone they have loved or cared for gradually disintegrates as a person, the whole relationship changes and new and unexpected demands are placed on carers. This is especially true when the person is affected at an early age.
The Alzheimer's Society is offering a new and innovative service for younger active people with dementia. They meet at the Alzheimer's Society premises on a Tuesday and Thursday, where trained staff are available to offer support and facilitate activities and outings suggested by the group members.
