Soon the 1999 total solar eclipse will occur on August 11th 1999. This will be the first total eclipse
seen in the UK since June 1927.
However, not having much faith in UK weather I will be travelling to Turkey to see it.
The photograph is one I took in 1994 on November 3rd, from the Atacama desert in Chile near the Peruvian border. The eclipse site was over 3000 metres high well above the cloud layers. This did cause some problems for some people who suffered altitude sickness after the overnight drive from sea level to the site, but the event was well worth it.
