Aims
The aims of this year's south Kazakhstan petroglyph survey were to map the known petroglyph sites at Eshki-olmes, and Kuldjabacy, using Global Positioning Systems technology (GPS), and to survey further areas in order to define the boundaries of these sites. Also to systematically record and document these petroglyphs in order to support a bid for World Heritage status.
Location
The areas covered by the south Kazakhstan petroglyph survey were twofold. Known petroglyph sites at Eshki-olmes in the Kuksu river valley, and also a more recently discovered area at Kuldjabacy in the Chu-Ili mountains.
Methodology
The methodology of the south Kazakhstan petroglyph survey was to record locations of important petroglyph groups using GPS. The valleys containing petroglyphs were numbered, radiating outwards from a central known point. The individual petroglyph groups were numbered and their position documented. Each group was photographed and full descriptions were written, while ink rubbings were taken of unusual or interesting examples.
Results
The results of the south Kazakhstan petroglyph survey were excellent. New petroglyph groups have been discovered and documented in both areas and it looks hopeful that a bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status may prove successful.
