Dean Koontz is a superb horror writer. He probably has 200 million copies of his books floating about the globe. I am in the process of trying to read all his work! This page is dedicated to my thoughts on his work. |
Books I Have Read In Chronological order:-
Demon Seed
A novel, which is different to his usual style, but offers the reader a story about Artificial Intelligence and the extremes 'it' will go to in order to further itself. Easy to read, but not as compelling as his other work, and in my opinion not as great.
Ticktock
Another short book, which concerns itself with voodoo and strange goings on involving a suspicious rag doll. Great characters and an excellent ending.
Intensity
One of Dean Koontz greatest novels, whose main character thrives on ascertaining the greatest feeling out of every situation. A great kidnap/rescue story. A superb leading female character, and an equally frightening enemy.
Strange Highways
A collection of short stories, some lasting only a few pages, yet others several chapters. This book proved to me that even short stories can have the same impact. Great ones include Bruno and Kittens.
Dark Rivers of the Heart
A brilliant novel which throws the reader into a strange number of events and shows the knowledge that Koontz has about Information Technology. A thrilling novel that is non-stop. I highly recommend it.
Mr. Murder
A strange tale of a man who is seeking an identity, and is strangely drawn to a small town, where he feels at home. A great idea and a superb book.
Dragon Tears
A tough going book concerning a situation where on passing a tramp in the street a man hears him say, "ticktock...you'll be dead in 16 hours." A great storyline, that really leaves one thinking.... Great introduction.
Hideaway
A strange tale concerning death and afterlife, and how one man believes himself to be something else. Quite a hard going book to get into, but nevertheless a great plot.
Cold Fire
This is in my opinion, another great novel. The plot revolves around a man who does not know why he is compelled to saving people's lives at the last minute. He becomes 'entangled' with a very curious reporter who tries to help him discover his motives. A very interesting book, again with a psychological theme, but nevertheless, has the typical Koontz trademarks that will keep any reader enthralled right until the last page!
The Bad Place
What an imagination Dean Koontz has!! Thats all I can say. This book encorporates so many fantastic ideas, its brilliant. Read it.
Midnight
If you are interested in Genetics then this is a must for you. A brilliant storyline that has such emotive and graphic detail, it is quite disturbing in some ways.
Lightning
I love this book. He delves into the realm of time travel and his concepts of this technology are extremely convincing. Nevertheless, things do not always go to plan....
IceBound
This book is in a much different style to the usual Koontz novels. It is set upon a huge expanse of ice which a team of scientists has to explode in order to fulfill the needs of the world. You've guessed it, a drought. The crew set the bombs ticking, but the icebergs breaks up, so the crew end up stranded upon this iceberg with the bombs, and no way to defuse them. A great suspense / thriller which is fast paced. Although this is a different sort of novel, usual Koontz traits are seen in the story.
Winter Moon
A tale with a twist. Strange glowing in a forest sparks an old man's curiosity, and after experiencing a sequence of strange events, he suspects something is wrong. A clever book were two completely different plots fuse together to form an amazing last third of the book. Very strange.
The Door to December
A girl who had been missing turns up after a number of years, having exprienced a troublesome past. Very psychological. A good read.
Phantoms
My favourite read, a real gruesome story, which encorporates, once again, Koontz's amazing concepts and ideas. All the residents of a town are found dead in strange circumstances and obscure events subsequently unfold....
Whispers
A clever thriller involving a man who is driven to kill, who each victim he believes to be his mother. A psychological storyline which is disturbing yet compelling to read. The ending is just brilliant, pulling together the whole plot.
Twilight Eyes
A novel concerning a young man who has the ability to see beyond the physical appearances of other humans, he sees the 'goblin' hiding beneath them, and it is these goblins who are plotting something extraordinary. This is excellent and it encorporates an extremely complex plot which again proves Koontz's ability. This is another one of his books I very much enjoyed.
