Although not a native UK species, the laburnum is widely grown in UK gardens, and is perhaps the nearest wood we have to ebony in both darkness and hardness. This sculpture resulted from a difficult design problem posed by a short length of trunk from a very old laburnum tree whose centre had completely rotted away. The question of what design to fit into the remaining cylinder of this wonderful wood gave me many sleepless nights! Although difficult to work, it is well worth the effort because it gives such a beautiful polished surface with the dark, exotic lustre seen in this sculpture.
