This sculpture was made in response to a chance conversation with a neighbour who had received a postcard bearing a Biblical quotation "I will not forget you - I have held you in the palm of My hand" (Isaiah 49, 15-16)  which she thought would make an ideal subject for a wood sculpture.

I agreed - the result you can see for yourself.

The wood from which it is made bears its own story.  Having worked for several years with colleagues in Grenoble, France, I found that the symbol of the town is a walnut, because this is one of their major regional specialities. During dinner the next day I was told that walnut wood was so plentiful that it was often burnt as firewood, to which I replied with horror that such a beautiful wood should NEVER have such an undignified end.  On my next visit to Grenoble, I was duly presented with a large,  heavy but very beautiful walnut log which was the genesis of this sculpture. This holds the record as my heaviest-ever hand luggage during my trip  back to Scotland.   Many thanks to Gerard and my other Grenoble friends (and to British Airways)!

A movie  (~350Kb) is available for this sculpture which gives a better three-dimensional impression.
