The smaller arch taking the tramway beneath the road. This had been concealed beneath much vegetation, but could be found once again during the summer of 1999. Bluebells, ever opportunistic, bloom in the unaccustomed sunlight. A large concrete bridge pier now occupies the ground where I stood to take this photograph. On October 17th the cutting here had been partially levelled off with hardcore, while the tunnel had had a narrow escape from being mauled by sheet steel piles driven to support the shuttering used for the new bridge pier. However, the structure is now to be retained, and summary repairs were in progress to one flank of the portal.
