Roger is a microchip designer and Hilary is a qualified Scottish lawyer. They moved to Santa Cruz, California in 1988, where Roger worked for a computer peripheral company. After the arrival of Jack and Andy, they moved to Massachusetts with another high-tech company. Shortly after the arrival of Sam, they were transferred back to Scotland where Roger set up a design centre for the same company. They have settled in Colinton, Edinburgh, and now have a sister (Rosie) for the three boys.
