Aberdeen plasterer Sidney Lornie and his wife, Olive, can afford rueful smiles as the centenary of soccer's most outlandish scoreline approaches, writes Hamish Mackay.
On September 12, 1885, Arbroath whacked Aberdeen Bon-Accord by the oft quoted record score of 36-0. Few remember, however that on the same day, down the coast at Dundee, Aberdeen Rovers were thrashed 35-0 by Dundee Harps, also in the first round of the Scottish Cup.
Sidney Lornie's grandfather, Andrew, was the hapless goalkeeper who picked the ball out of the Bon-Accord net 36 times all those years ago. Amazingly, who should have been in goal for Aberdeen Rovers but Olive's own grandfather, William Wilson. The people who sets sports quiz questions are going to have a field day on that one.
Sidney, who married Olive in 1952 treats the whole affair with admirable stoicism. " You have to laugh about it. What else can you do after carrying a load like that all these years. " The Lornie story, one of many is part of the soccar memorabilia flooding into Gayfield Park, home of Arbroath, as the famous day nears. "
