(An All-Age Service Song, particularly, but not necessarily, for All Saints Day)

This never had pretensions to being great lyrics or music, but to my considerable amazement has turned out to be one of my more popular offerings at church.

I was rostered to lead all-age worship for All Saints Day back in 1998, and wanted to teach on this specific theme. However, I could find not a single song or hymn directly relating to it. So two days before the service I decided to try to write something that might be fun to sing and that would at least sum up the points I was talking about. With some rapid help from friends on the Christian Songwriters Group mailing list this came out just in time.

Now, I cannot envisage this working for either adults only or children only. The children actually enjoy singing long words like "contagious" (as long as you explain what they mean), as well as shouting "bad grammar!", but it isn't a children's song. Similarly, the adults enjoyed it, and identified with the lyrics, but the style wouldn't have been right for them on their own.

I've now (9 years later) prepared an MP3 (1.1Mb) which you can download by clicking here. Unfortunately, I haven't yet dragooned in any kids to give the full desired effect!

Lyrics (by Michael Lehr)

We are all called to be saints!
Yes we're all called to be saints!
It's so easy to see that's the way we should be,
But we have to admit that we ain't (bad grammar)!
Yes, we're all called to be saints,
Though the thought appears somewhat quaint.
We are none too courageous, avoid things contagious,
And the sight of blood can make us faint!
But the strangest of all is God continues to call us
And he tells us .... We all can be saints!

We are all called to be saints!
Yes we're all called to be saints!
If we look to the Lord, put our trust in his word,
He can make of us something we ain't (bad grammar)!
Yes, we're all called to be saints,
To throw off our earthly restraints.
Though the way can be strenuous, he's always there with us –
He keeps the promise he has made.
Though we stumble and fall, God will continue to call us,
And to tell us .... We all can be saints!
