Oh shit it's not sorted.....

Araan's Newbies' vs Reg's

In Usenet a long, tiresome battle has been fought between reg and newbie. Mr Arran "Ace" Yarwood isn't vauge.

Well, it has been a while, and I have had **SSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO** much to do. (Been fiddling with Quake2, and my web page and upgrading my computer, and stuff) But now I am all ready to do a short (Or mauybe long...) P170 article. Regs Vs. Newbies:

In the world of Usenet and on-line gaming, you will usually find a constant war between to species:

Homo-Regulus, and Neandathal-Newbie.

This conflict can be seen anywhere.

"Regs" with their incresed cranial capacity, have evolved into a higher intellect than neandathal newbies. This doesn't mean that Neandathal newbies Aren't evolving, oh no. Everyday, a newbie becomes a "reg" through patience and understanding.

There are, however, un-pleasant sides to both. "Regs" are prone to look down upon mistakes by newbies, and use their superior intellect to insult, rebuke and ridicule the happless "newbie"

However, Newbies, (Being in-experienced) are prone to break tabboo, breach nettiquet, and make many a "faux pas."

"This is not their" fault, many would say. "They don't know anybetter" says others.

Fair enough. I had to search usenet EVERYWHERE to find out how to activate the joystick in Quake2, because it wasn't in the manual ANYWHERE

This said, the internet is full of newbies who don't read the maunal

Now, look me in the eye and tell me this **ISN'T** stupidity? An example: In Alt.games.Jediknight I often find "Newbies" writing in saying "How do I do this puzzle, how do I kill that Jedi?" Fair enough, the puzzles were ment to be challenging. But when you find someone saying "How do I open a door?" dispite their being pictures of switches, doors, and a full explanation in the manual (I know, I checked and it was on Page 3) you have to ask yourself: Are they dense, illiterate, or just plain lazy?

Also, newbies complain about how "regs" are "elitist" and band together. Is this surprising? Regs know each other, are mates, Know what they are talking about, and **HAVE** read the manual. They have respect for each other.

Now, most regs can forgive a silly newbie mistake. Take a person called "SimpleSi" who replied to David Deans "Parody" of a "Puffy Jacket" style message. All the regs know Panda, and know he likes Digi so much, he makes a tribute page (This one.) Newbie didn't, and told him in true community spirit "To get out if you don't like digi, you stupid fool." Dispite a lot of piss-taking, we got over it, and he still posts a bit to alt.digi. No big deal there.

Now take another:

I was in alt.games.jediknight, and someone posted what is known as "An on-topic spam message" because, all though they were in the topic of the newsgroup, they were actively spamming.

He was looking for a fool to go to the hassle (Free of charge) of making his "clan" (Team) a map. I told him (Politely, and sincerely) that He was looking in the wrong place. I was right: he reicieved no offers.

Dispite this, he seemed to take it as a personal insult, and replied to every other posting I had made in the newgroup I had made. This was silly, as I was talking to a mate, telling him to drop this weak running joke about my graphics card (Nerdy, eh?) and the "fiesty Newbie" mis-understood and thought I was having a go at my mate... Well, one thing led to another, and the whole newsgroup told him what a complete areshole he was (I believe, somebody (Not me) E-mail bombed him...)

Was it unfair of the group to tell him what a jerk he was? Ok, so he was a newbie, but that doesn't excuse him from using the word "Fuck" most creatively, and basicly, Pissing off everyone else.

Now, digitiser (Especially Fat Sow, Les Bunder and Stuart "Ain't I so authoritive - why are you shaking your heads?" Cambell) seems to think that all of us experienced netitzens jump on newbies, rebuke, and ridicule them, etc. Every chance we get.

So I will chose a circumstance closer to home. Much more relevant to dear Paul Rose:

I was in alt.digitiser, and a newbie troll seemed fit to delight the newsgroup with 60 lines of "Digitiser is crap" and nothing else. Oh, so we should embrace someone like that? Tolerate them and not say "If you don't like it, get out" (De ja vous, eh?)

They seem to think it is Unfair for us to completely trounce someone less experienced in the game of our choice.

I say they are Completely Wrong. Newbies won't get good at a game if they only play people who are crap. Also, they can't expect us to stand still and get shot without offering any resistance... We pay our phone bill, we want to have fun too. If a newbie doesn't like getting slaghtered, join a different game, or perhaps go into the "Newbie" lobby (The MS-Internet Gaming Zone have "Rookie" lobbies for people who are new, crap, both.)

I say to newbies: Patience and perseverance, and you too will have the knowledge and authority to ridicule those who are wrong. And, with your experience, you can KNOW you are in the right.

In the words of Stuart "I never said I am great, but that doesn't mean I'm not - why are you shaking your heads?" Cambell: "Wise-up"
