Now I've done mine, send me yours, and better it. Dated 15/5/98, PS Mark your emails NOT YOUR PANEL 4.[NOT] Your Panel 4
Only one survived. Some got to the last hurdle, but many didn't make it. Most, actully didn't get sent to biffo. In the first of a new series (if people wish to send their old P4 attempts to me) page170 will be publishing old Your Panel 4 attempts. If you have one and would like to see your name in a strange limy colour, then Email me with it. But first, my un-published gem.Er, Hi there. I'm David Deans. You may know me from shows like page170 and as PAndroid on usenet. Well welcome. I'm here to talk to you about emulation (David Dragged outside) (Wacked on head)(Brought back in)
Hi again. Anyway, for the uninitiated, or the completly stupid, emulation is where a peice of software (or hardware) emulates anouther peice of hardware. Simple concept, yes?
The EMU scene has been going for years now, spectrum and c64 emulators have been around for as long as the Amiga had been. But it really got a kick up the jacksee in 1996, with the release of several Emulators that did 16-bit. Namely Genecyst and KGEN. They ran MegaDrive software.
What had used to be assumed as a sad, lonesome hobby was taken up by people normally associated with Internet warez, or piracy. ROMS, as the copied software that runs on console emu's, became swapped and downloaded in IRC rooms and websites accross the net. It also affected the 8-bit machines like the NES and the Master System, as their scenes started to show life as well. Soon it became the 3rd biggest illegal trade on the net, after warez, and mpeglayer3 music files. (ROMS are copied cartridges, you see, and for lence dodgy software).
What started as a hobby for most people, became an obbession, collectors of ROMS will tell you about how big a collecion they have, or how many times their 300 ROM website has been closed down. Now there are SNES emulators around, anyone can jump in. It's difficult to find the software, but when you do, it certainly can be rewarding.
Thank you. Now bog off.
