Gower Festival - an introduction

The Gower Festival is a very special blend of wonderful music, beautiful churches and summer evenings.

The Gower Peninsula is a magical place, somewhat reminiscent of Tolkein's "Shire" except that Gower also has the sea. It was the first area in Britain designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its rugged cliffs, sandy bays and rock pools make it a wonderful place for a holiday. Its quiet green countryside is dotted with ancient churches and these add further mystery and charm. Many of them have pre-Norman origins and ancient Welsh saints, such as St. Teilo, St. Catwyg and St. Illtyd to guard them from Viking pirates.

Every year for two weeks the Festival brings the very best in music to the Gower churches. Most of the concerts are small and intimate - performances by soloists, quartets and trios, but there are larger concerts in the bigger churches, featuring choral works especially.

For nearly a quarter of a century, Festival friends and holidaymakers have enjoyed this wonderfully varied music in the last two weeks of July, moving out in the intervals to hear the sound of the sea, meet new friends and sip a glass of wine.

The Gower Festival is a member of Gwyliau Cymru which works with
the Arts Council of Wales and Wales Tourist Board to promote
festivals throughout Wales.
