Presently, North Atlantic Shellfish Ltd. is focusing on the production
of top quality fresh mussels. The species being grown is the Blue
Mussel, Mytilus Edulis, which is native in Shetland waters.
Our Mussels The mussel is a bivalve shellfish which must reach the customer alive. Factors such as temperature and poor handling can lead to a deteriation in the quality of the product, so we at North Atlantic Shellfish Ltd. supply our mussels in iced boxes that ensure the product remains sealed and under controlled conditions until it reaches the customer. Each box of mussels has four five-kilo bags of mussels within it along with the ice. Each bag has within it a health mark label that gives traceability right back to the site from which they were harvested. The health mark label has a date of dispatch on it and from this we give a shelf life of 10 days. North Atlantic Shellfish is well placed to supply medium and large sized orders for fresh Shetland Mussels. We have the capacity to harvest up to five tonnes per day and all orders are placed into chilled storage within hours of reaching the harvesting facility. Once the mussels are packaged, we send them to the mainland Scotland on the P&O Ferry link which operates between Shetland and Aberdeen each day. The mussels arrive in Aberdeen for further transportation by the following morning. Quality Assurance As a full participant in the Shetland Seafood Quality Control initiative the company can provide full documentation to certify the origin of all batches of shellfish giving reassurance to all customers.
