October97

3rd October, Claytons I, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

In last year's competition, Wiseton CC came 3rd in the Premier division (their best ever position), with North Lincs College 2nd and Claytons I 1st. The opening two fixtures this year are against these teams, which is a tough proposition.

Claytons won the toss and put Wiseton in to bat. Wiseton batted steadily all the way through their innings, making a respectable 96 for 3, with Nev Carter, Dennis Brown, Graham Bell and George Platts all making over 15 runs. Claytons then batted sensibly and knocked the runs off for 1 wicket (two batsmen retired on 25) with 3 balls remaining. Nev Carter was the best of the Wiseton bowlers, with 3 overs for 14 runs.

17th October,    North Lincs College,    Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

College won the toss and put Wiseton in to bat, as most teams favour chasing runs in this type of cricket. Wiseton made 92 all out, with Carter (36) and G.Bell (20) top scoring. The College bowlers helped by providing an extra 16 runs in wides and no balls!
In reply, College started out like a house on fire with 31 runs off the first two overs (mainly scrambled singles)! They eventually knocked the runs off for 1 wicket with 2.5 overs left.

November97

7th November, Cherry Willingham, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

Wiseton had their first Lincoln indoor win of the season, with an excellent fielding and bowling performance.

For the 3rd time in a row, the opposition won the toss and put Wiseton in to bat. Nev Carter top scored with 24 and there were useful knocks from Dennis Brown (13) and Simon Cox (10), but wickets fell a bit too regularly, and the final score of 83 all out looked below par.

When Cherry batted, an excellent catch by George Platts off Graham Bell's 1st over put the brakes on their scoring rate and four good run outs left them needing 13 runs to win off the last over with one wicket to fall. Simon Cox bowled this last over and the wicket fell to his first ball, leaving Wiseton victors by 12 runs. The best of Wiseton's bowlers were Nev Carter, with 3 overs for 11 runs, and Simon Cox, with 2.1 overs 1 wicket for 12 runs. Graham Bell, with 3 overs for 16 runs was also very tight.

7th November, Marshalls, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

Yet again, skipper Nev Carter lost the toss and Wiseton ended up batting first. Excellent knocks of 40 from Dennis Brown and 25 from Graham Bell, along with useful scores from George Platts (12) and Nev Carter (11) took Wiseton's total to 119 for 3 off the allocated 12 overs. In reply, Housham and Brooks both retired on 25 for Marshalls after opening the batting. Warburton was run out on 24 a couple of overs later, but at this stage, Marshalls seemed to be cruising it. Some tight bowling and keen fielding pegged the middle order back, but the opposition still looked favourites going into the last over, with 9 runs needed and 5 wickets left. Nev Carter bowled the last over and a wicket fell to a run out on the 1st ball. The next ball was hit for 3, followed by two dot balls, then another 3. This meant Marshalls required 3 to win or 2 to tie from the last ball. The last ball swung away from the bat and evaded the outside edge, going safely through to keeper Dennis Brown, leaving Marshalls 2 runs short of victory. The best bowlers were Nev Carter, with 3 overs for 21 runs, and Simon Cox, with 3 overs for 27 runs. A win for Wiseton by the narrowest of margins, but a good all-round team effort!

21st November, Hykeham, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

You guessed it! Wiseton lost the toss again and were put in to bat. Excellent knocks of 26 from Nev Carter, 26 from Dennis Brown and 28 from Graham Bell (all not out) gave Wiseton a superb start to the innings. George Platts chipped in with 11 before being bowled, then Roger Fawcett and Graham Peck batted out the last 3 overs taking the team to a creditable 123 for 1 after the allotted 12 overs.

Hykeham started in similar vein to Wiseton, with the first 3 batsmen reaching 25 and retiring. A run out by Nev Carter was the only wicket to fall with 3 overs to go. Wiseton's inexperienced attack (Graham Peck, bowling for the first time indoors, gave away 32 runs, including 7 no balls, in his 2 overs) was unable to stem the flow of runs and Hykeham reached the target with an over to spare. The pick of Wiseton's bowlers were Graham Bell, with 3 overs for 28 runs, and Nev Carter, with 3 overs for 29 runs.

30th November, Claytons I, Lincoln Indoor League Cup

Not again!! Yes, Nev Carter kept up his 100% record of losing the toss and Wiseton were summarily put in to bat. Nev Carter batted well before being bowled by Cowley for 23 and George Platts made a useful 18. Unfortunately, none of the other Wiseton players could manage double figures and the final total of 72 all out looked inadequate.

Claytons lost Plant in the 1st over, run out by Nev Carter, but knocked off the runs without further loss with 2 overs to spare. All the Wiseton bowlers were tidy, but didn't have enough runs to play with.

December97

14th December, Lea Park, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

As usual, Wiseton batted first after losing the toss. Good scores of 24 from Dennis Brown, 21 from George Platts, 18 from Graham Bell, 17 from Nev Carter and 17 from Roger Fawcett saw a useful total of 122 for 4 posted.

Lea Park had their first two batsmen retire on 25 before a couple of run outs from Platts and Bell slowed them down slightly. Their last two batsmen batted sensibly, picking up singles seemingly at will and knocked the runs off with an over to go. Wiseton's fielding was somewhat hesitant, with both Nev Carter and George Platts putting down straightforward catches. The best Wiseton bowlers were George Platts, with 3 overs for 23 runs, and Nev Carter, with 2 overs for 14 runs.

 January98

9th January, Claytons, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

Nev Carter lost the toss for the umpteenth time and Wiseton were summarily put in to bat, as is usual on these occasions! Graham Bell and Roger Fawcett top scored with 22 runs a piece, closely followed by Nev Carter with 20, as Wiseton rattled up a reasonable total of 100 all out.

Plant and Bradley both retired on 25 in Claytons' reply and despite a couple of run outs, they reached the target with some comfort, having 3 overs to spare.

30th January, North Lincs College, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

Surprise, surprise! Wiseton batted second in this match, but not due to winning the toss. The opposition elected to bat first after they had called correctly. A couple of early run outs put Wiseton in command, but the College middle order batted sensibly to bring the total to 102 for 5 at the close. Nev Carter was the tightest bowler with 3 overs, 1 for 17. Dennis Brown, having a rare stint without the keepers gloves on, fielded superbly and also picked up a couple of wickets, although he was a bit expensive at 36 runs off 3 overs.

Wiseton started their innings well, with Nev Carter making 16 and Dennis Brown retiring on 25. Things then got better still as George Platts also retired on 25. Bill Henton and Simon Cox needed a further 20 runs to win, which they got without any problems, leaving Wiseton victors by 5 wickets, with an over to spare.

February98

13th February, Cherry Willingham, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

At Last, Wiseton won the toss. Unfortunately they never really got over this momentous occasion! Putting Cherry in to bat, they saw their openers Andrews and Timmins hammer a rapid 50 opening partnership before they both retired. Graham Bell bowled well and picked up a cheap wicket, but the remaining Cherry batsmen all got 20+ and Mark Andrews returned to take his total to 40 n.o. - quite an achievement in the indoor game! Cherry Willingham amassed the grand total of 144 runs, - very difficult to chase. Graham Bell was the best Wiseton bowler with 1 for 19 from 3 overs. Nev Carter had 2 for 32, Simon Cox 1 for 38 and Dennis Brown 0 for 46 all from 3 overs.

Chasing this large score, Nev Carter and Dennis Brown started positively, with 24 runs off the first 2 overs. Dennis was then caught and bowled for 8 and Graham Bell also got 8 before being run out. Bill Henton and Nev Carter had a steady partnership of 20, before Nev retired on 26 n.o., bringing Simon Cox to the wicket. Simon only lasted a few balls before being caught for 1 and Roger Fawcett then joined Bill Henton. Bill was soon caught out for 14, bringing Nev Carter back in again to continue his innings. Roger was immediatly run out from a direct hit for 4 runs, leaving Nev to attempt to get the remaining 74 runs from the last 5 overs. Batting as last man, Nev knocked 13 off the next over, 23 off the next one and 17 off the next. This left 21 to get from the last 3 overs and Cherry were getting worried. The next 4 balls saw another 7 runs added to the score, but with only 14 needed for victory, Roger Fawcett (non striker) was run out with a direct hit to the stumps. This ended a mammoth innings of 73 by Nev and an excellent effort of 131 all out for Wiseton chasing 144.

15th February, Marshalls, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

Wiseton won the toss (2 in a row) and put Marshalls in to bat. Excellent bowling saw the opposition dismissed for 58 in 11.2 overs. Nev Carter took 2 for 10, Graham Bell 1 for 9, Dennis Brown 1 for 25 and Andy Bichen 0 for 11. Wiseton knocked the runs off without losing a wicket, with both Dennis Brown and Nev Carter retiring on 25. Not a bad result against one of the top teams this year.

March98

1st March, North Hykeham, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

Due to a clash with a Gainsborough League game, Wiseton started with only 4 players. Nev Carter and Roger Fawcett played from 7pm to 8pm in Gainsborough and then made the dash to Lincoln to play from 8pm to 9pm in this game! Luckily Wiseton won the toss and batted first, with Dennis Brown and Richard bell putting on 20 for the 1st wicket before Dennis was caught out for 10. This brought the two Bells, Richard and Graham together for another fruitful partnership before both retired on 25.The remaining Wiseton batting collapsed, with Bill Henton, Nev Carter and Roger Fawcett getting 4 between them ( perhaps the swift journey from Gainsborough was not such a good idea after all!!). Graham and Richard Bell came back in and batted out the last few overs, Graham getting bowled for 28 and Richard being undefeated on 33.

In reply, Hykeham knocked the runs off without losing a wicket and with the first 2 batsmen retiring. Graham Bell was the most economical bowler with 3 overs for 17 runs.

20th March, Lea Park, Lincoln Indoor League Premier Division

After losing the toss, Wiseton were put in to bat. A superb opening partnership between Nev Carter and Dennis Brown finished with both batsmen retiring on 25. George Platts kept up the good work, also retiring on 28. Andy Bichen made 4, followed by an excellent 21 from Simon Cox and a useful 10 from Roger Fawcett. Nev Carter and Dennis Brown came back in, but both perished quickly leaving Wiseton on 138 for 5 after their 12 overs.

Lea Park made a good effort at the run chase, but never quite got up to the asking rate, finishing on 123 all out with 2 balls left. All the Wiseton bowlers put in a good performance, Nev Carter taking 2 for 27, George Platts 1 for 26, Simon Cox 1 for 32 and Andy Bichen 1 for 33.
