Wiseton v R.H.P
By Arthur Staves
The second game of the season was away at Newark to R.H.P who were relegated
from Section C last season.
After winning the toss captain Graham Bell put R.H.P into bat on a dry
and firm wicket. Ryan Stubbins making his debut in the league side
bowled very well to take 3 for 25 in 8 overs. The veteran George
Platts polished off the R.H.P innings with 4 for 19 off 7.1 overs.
The R.H.P total of 129 looked well within reach of Wiseton who had 51 overs
left in which to score them. James Sumner scored at his usual brisk
pace, but with score on 27 disaster struck as Sumner was bowled out and
the next four wickets fell for only 12 runs. Another veteran Simon
Cox batted very well to score 27no but the last wicket fell at 96, 33 runs
short of the R.H.P total.
Wiseton collected just 4 bonus points from a game they should have won.

These days computers and the Internet provide people with a wealth of information
to do with just about anything you can possibly think of.
Not being a club to lag behind in the technology stakes Wiseton now has
its own site on the World Wide Web.
Our own computer guru Nev Carter has set up the site on the Web.
It is in its development stage at the moment but anybody in the world can
access this site and look at the information on Wiseton.
Already a number of our first team have their mug shots in the photo gallery
including Graham Bell, Dave Pike, Jack Bell (just fits!!) and Arthur Staves,
so the whole world are looking at you in all your splendor!!!!!
Anybody who has access to the Web the site address is as follows.

The Umpires Dilemma?
by Arthur Staves
In the second over of the league match against R.H.P the umpire called
a no ball, he signaled a wide and forgot to add an extra ball to the over.
The scorer should obey the umpires signals, so a wide was entered in the
score book, nothing could be done about the extra ball!!
Did you know that a Mr Harry Elliot, who started off his career as a Wiseton
groundsman, went on to play for both Derbyshire and England.
Wiseton v Edwinstowe
By Arthur Staves
A rain affected home game ending in a draw, six points each plus four bonus
points each.
The toss was won by Edwinstowe who chose to put Wiseton into bat on a wet
and slow wicket.
Bell, Sumner, Pike and Richard Bell were all out early on in the Wiseton
innings leaving the home side in a difficult position on 22 for 4.
But Nev Carter with 39 and Richard Staves with 34 soon took the Wiseton
score onto 95 for 5. Richard Staves hitting the ball onto the lawn of Wiseton
Hall, some 80 - 100 yards, one of three sixes in his innings. Daran Hewitt
was run out of the final ball of the innings for a solid 23, these
three being the only players to reach double figures in the Wiseton innings.
In reply to Wiseton’s 121 all out Edwinstowe batted cautiously to finish
on 76 for 8.
Jack Bell took 4 for 24 off 18 overs with George Platts again chipping
in with a valuable 2 for 12.

Wiseton v Lea Park
By Arthur Staves
The season opened with a home game against Lea Park, but only 3 overs were
possible due to persistent rain. James Sumner was left on 8no and
Barry Martin 0no. Wiseton taking 6 points from a damp and disappointing
start to the season.

Wiseton v Cutthorpe
By Daran Hewitt
Daran Hewitt lost the toss at the start of a depressing afternoon for Wiseton.
After a couple of early wickets Cutthorpe cut lose with Anabman making
66 and Kingham 95no and making a mess of the Wiseton bowling figures.
The only bowler with any recognition was Simon Pixsley who finished with
figures of 3 for 44 off 12 overs which earned him the Wiseton man of the
match award. A poor display in the field by Hewitt and a disastrous
last over by Carter who was hit for 28 and finished with figures of 1 for
71. Cutthorpe reached a total of 214 for 5 off their 40 overs.
Just when we thought things could not get any worse a total of four run
outs and three ducks meant Wiseton could only reach a total of 79 all out,
with only Ian Mather putting up any resistance with a gutsy innings of
37.
All in all a very bad afternoon for Wiseton.
M.O.M: Simon Pixsley
Wiseton v Anston
By Daran Hewitt
The Wiseton Sunday side started the new season in winning form with a victory
over our old rivals Anston
Daran Hewitt won the toss and chose to bat on what was a very damp wicket
and outfield due to the previous days rain. A steady start was made
by the two openers Simon Pixsley and Ian Mather which gave Wiseton a platform
to build upon. Pixsley made 10 on his debut before being bowled middle
stump. A fine innings of 23no by Adam Kay was well supported by Nev
Carter who reached 16 before being caught. Wiseton eventually reached
98 for 7 in their 40 overs.
Anston’s reply started badly when barker took an early wicket, Kay
making a simple catch look devilishly difficult. Richard Bell took
two wickets in his opening spell which put Anston under pressure.
It was Ryan Stubbins who took the final few wickets of the Anston innings
finishing with a personal figures of 4 for 21. It was a good all
round performance from Wiseton and lets hope it continues throughout the
season.
M.O.M: Adam Kay
Wiseton are going on tour for 3 days on the 31st August - 2nd September
to Whitley Bay. Three games have been organized against Morpeth,
Ashington and Benwell Hill.

Wiseton v Robinsons
By Arthur Staves
A damp and miserable outfield once again, meant a wet outfield and a slow
pitch.
Wiseton have not found the form of last year, a total of 122 was again
not enough, but the visitors lost nine wickets in search of this total.
Four dropped catches did not help matters and we must be less careless
in this vital part of the game. It was a surprise to see George Platts
batting at No.5, whatever the plan was it didn’t come off. Ian Ambler
played his first game of the season and bowled reasonably well with figures
of 14-2-42-3, Richard Bell was also in the wickets with 4 for 43.
Ian Adams made his first appearance for Wiseton after an absence of almost
9 years, he was a promising middle order batsman when he left to work in
the South.
Wiseton now face an uphill battle if they are to gain promotion to
Section C next year after picking up only 4 points from this game.

How did you join Wiseton?
I was playing for Clinton Arms against Wiseton in the Evening League and
managed to thrash 47 off some poor bowling ( only joking!!) and Graham
Bell asked me if I played for anybody on a Saturday, I didn't, and so he
asked me to join Wiseton.
What is your highest score for Wiseton?
57
Which famous player do you most admire?
Ian Botham, do I really need to explain why!!!
Believe it or not he has a life size cut out of Botham in his bedroom.(Sad
Lad)
Who is your most admired player at Wiseton?
George Platts for his 110% commitment when he is playing and “Jack” Bell
because of his cricketing ability.
What has been your favorite moment at Wiseton?
Scoring 46 off of 18 balls for Wiseton in the Bassetlaw League against
Bevercotes to tie the game.
What is your target for this season?
To score three 50’s and not to get the dreaded duck award.
What about as Captain of the Sunday team?
To maintain a good standard of cricket and win as many games as possible.
Thank you to all those people who attended the Wiseton race night that
was held at the Masonic Hall in Retford.
A good night was had by all and and a total of around £370 was raised
and donated to club funds.
So thank you to all the companies who sponsored a race and those who purchased
a horse or jockey.
Winter Indoor League Summary
Wiseton A
Under the strong leadership of George Platts Wiseton A soon established
themselves as “the team to beat” in Division One. Powerful Batting
from Graham Bell, Nev. Carter and Richard Staves often meant Wiseton posted
good scores. Andy Bichan was the teams main strike bowler and was
backed up by Platts, Carter and Bell. Wiseton A’s only defeat in
the league came against Laughton, but the team still finished with an impressive
record of: Played 12, Won 11, Lost 1 and won the league title.
Wiseton A and Laughton were to meet again in the cup final. After
bowling Laughton out for a modest total it looked as though a league and
cup double was on the cards for Wiseton, especially when Carter, Bell and
Platts are retired with 25, but it wasn't long before their services were
required once more as a Wiseton collapse took place. With two balls
to go and one wicket left Wiseton needed a boundary to win but it wasn't
to be and Wiseton had to settle for the runner up spot.
It was a great season for the team and lets hope it continues next year.
Wiseton B
By Adam Kay
Wiseton B had a much improved Season under the leadership of Daran Hewitt.
The team had been battling for promotion up until the final few games of
the season when a loss of form and other results going against them meant
Wiseton had to settle for third position.
There were some good all round performances from the whole team, the opening
partnership of Simon Pixsley and Richard Bell in both the batting and bowling
proving highly successful throughout the season. Pixsley getting
the teams only 50 with Bell and Ben Durham both achieving scores in the
40’s. Misterton and Marton were the teams promoted with Wiseton B
in third with a record of :
Played 12, Won 7, Lost 5
Richard Bells fast bowling making the Wiseton players glad to be on his
side but left wicket keeper Hewitt with VERY sore hands!!!!!!!!!!!
Chairman's Remarks:
I very much welcome the concept of this newsletter and am pleased to be
asked to contribute to its inaugural edition.
April promised so much with the weather set fair, but as soon as the cricket
season appeared over the horizon so loomed the rain and the wind.
Really, must we play Hundall in the first week of May? Armed with
anoraks we made our bi-annual pilgrimage to the Peaks, a select band of
only seven! A late arrival shrugged off stag night blues, plus a
gift from the opposition made nine, and then we beat them thanks to the
first century maker of the season, Nev Carter. Rain affected matches
in the league means much more to look forward to in that direction.
Wiseton is looking green and gorgeous and we are looking forward to a long
and happy season.
Our tour to hospitable Northumberland is well on course. Matches
at Morpeth, Ashington (birthplace of the Charlton brothers ) and Benwell
Hill which is host to 2nd XI County matches. Morpeth CC sold its
ground for a reported 2 million pounds and has spent the money on its new
grounds, we shall be interested to see.
We stay at Whitley Bay. There will be cricket practice on the beach
- and a trip round the bay at sometime - not by boat!! We go on the 31st
of August to 2nd of September.
Also keep the 400 Club members coming.
Wiseton v Rotherham St. Peters
By Daran Hewitt
With a cloudy start to the Rotherham innings, Wiseton made steady inroads
into the oppositions top order batsman with Ian Ambler taking 2 for 7 from
6 overs and Steve Firth bowling well in his first game for 2 years with
8 overs for 21. Witty Matt Howcroft bowling an intimidating line
and length that would have been more suited to the bodyline series picked
up his prize wicket and was swiftly taken off!!!!
Kay and Carter finished the innings off with three wickets apiece, leaving
St. Peters with a total off 87 all out.
Wiseton made a slow start with the new opening partnership of Ryan Stubbins
and Richard Bell stuttering to 15 for 1 off 8 overs. Roger Fawcett
then arrived at the crease and managed to get his run to avoid taking an
early lead in the duck chart and was then promptly bowled out. Captain
Hewitt came in at the dizzy heights of No.4 which proved to be an inspired
decision as he made a very slow but sure innings of 33 which was well supported
by the two Ian’s, Mather and Ambler. After those two departed Wiseton
suffered a few heart stopping moments before Carter and Kay finished off
the run chase, just!!!!
M.O.M: Daran Hewitt
GOOD LUCK
Good luck from all the Wiseton players and members to Scott Hunter and
Jane Allen who are to marry on May 24th.
By Steve Thompson
Hello from Australia!!
As you may be aware, myself and Adam have taken steps to informally link
our clubs in a ‘sister club’ arrangement, to provide a point of discussion,
a tie between our countries and experience of how cricket is played elsewhere.
Members of Echuca South CC have shown plenty of interest in this venture,
and hope it leads to much friendly contact, perhaps sometime in the future
meetings between members of our two bodies.
First a brief run-down on our club. We were formed in 1952, so compared
with Wiseton are comparatively young, but in local terms we are the second
oldest cricket club in our league. Echuca is on the border of Victoria
and New South Wales some 200 kms north of Melbourne with a population of
12,000. Other towns in our league include Rochester, Tongala, Lockington,
Mathoura and Moama.
Our club fields teams in three senior and two junior grades (A,B,C,U16
and U14.)
There are approximately 50 regular members from all backgrounds ranging
from solicitors, bank managers, mechanics, butchers and students.
We are, first and foremost, a very social club regardless of on field performances
- however we have also had our share of excellent cricketers and premiership
success.
We have our own ground, shared with an Aussie Rules football team which
uses it in the winter. The club is in the process of building three
new training nets at the ground, which should be ready for next season
(97 / 98). A recently renovated clubroom is sited there, which contains
some memorabilia of premierships - to which soon to be added info on Wiseton,
which should be a talking point in the future.
In closing, our club extends to yours the best of luck in your new season,
both in the league and in the friendly matches. Hopefully both the
contact between our clubs, and the cricket played by both, will be successful.
Steve Thompson
Echuca South C.C
Arthur Staves, our club scorer, is a happy man this year, as Wiseton now
has its own scorebox, which is a welcome addition to the ground.
The money used to purchase the scorebox was kindly donated by Mrs
Carter & Dr Raine.
Nev Carter became the first Wiseton player this season to score a hundred
( 106 ).
He’s also managed three man of the match awards already this season.
Wiseton v Hundall
By Adam Kay
A rain interrupted match was brightened up with a superb display of batting
by captain Nev Carter who hit a wonderful 106 which included a number of
big sixes. He was supported at the wicket by Adam Kay who made a
very stuttery 28 and Ben Durham who made a quick fire 19.
Ryan Stubbins continued his good early season form with the ball
by picking up three wickets for 30 runs and Scott Hunter also bowled well
in his five over spell giving away only 12 runs.
Hundall were eventually bowled out for less than a hundred which gave Wiseton
their second win of the season and Nev Carter his first hundred of the
year which I’m sure will stand him in good stead for the coming league
fixtures.
