 Wiseton v Harthill
By Arthur Staves

A much better performance by a still under strength Wiseton team.
Simon Cox claimed four victims with catches behind the stumps.  George Platts making his return to the team bowled very well to take 4 for 23 of 9 overs, it could have been five wickets had it not been for a dropped catch in the final over from Jack Bell.
Jack Bell made the highest score so far this season with 45 not out and Nev Carter again made more than 30 but was out caught, once again hitting the ball in the air too much.  Richard staves again disappointed with 22 when he looked set to make a big score.
On this performance a win should not be far away.

M.O.M: George Platts

 Wiseton v Treeton Welfare

Rain had been falling all morning which almost led to the game being called off, but it cleared up and the game against one of our old rivals Treeton Welfare survived.
Wiseton welcomed back Richard Ambler and a new player in the form of Javid Rashid who was making his debut for Wiseton.  Richard Ambler was soon in the thick of the action but his rustiness in the field showed as he dropped three difficult chances that cost him 60p on his return, not to be outdone Scott Hunter joined in by dropping two.  Ryan Stubbins again bowled well but went unrewarded, Kay with some indifferent bowling picked up two wickets as did Barker, but it was left to David Pike and Nev Carter to bowl the remaining overs, Pike claiming figures of 2 for 17 and Carter 3 for 35 as Treeton finished their innings on 159 for 9.
In reply Wiseton started well enough with Ian Mather making 14, Carter 19 and debutante Javid  showing some keen running during his innings of 37.  David Pike made 17 but then a famous Wiseton collapse took place as the next 7 wickets went for next to nothing including a hat trick for one of the Treeton youngsters, although Matt Howcroft can count himself unlucky to be given out LBW on the hat trick ball as it was felt by many that he clearly hit the ball.  Wiseton were eventually bowled out for 105.
Once again it was the batting that let Wiseton down but it will be strengthened with the return of Daran Hewitt for the game against Centralians.
M.O.M:  Javid Rashid

 Crossword Winner
A poor response to the crossword meant only 2 correct entries in last moths competition, and the bottle of wine goes to Mrs Helen Pike who's name was first out of the hat.

Hello from Australia, the country with a proud but slipping grasp of the Ashes.
While Mike Athurton's team was dishing it up to the Aussies in the one-dayers and the first Test, Echuca South's cricketers have been busy setting up our new practice area, located at our ground.  Three new nets have been constructed, a new scoreboard is underway, and the clubrooms have been fully renovated.  All is set for a bright start to season 1997-98.
Unfortunately we've had some bad news.  Our Grade A Captain from last season, Ian Quanchi, has been forced to resign as skipper for this coming season for personal reasons.  This means we are currently on the look-out for a new captain-ordinarily the job would go to the vice captain but as he (me!) is travelling to Africa and England in January, the club will have to look further afield.  My trip comes first!!
Perhaps its fitting to say a few words about Ian, as he is something of a character.  He came to us from a Melbourne sub-district club Camberwell (now a fully fledged VCA club after merging with Collingwood, which is captained by Matthew Elliot.)  Ian is a policeman  by profession, which makes it hard driving around town-he has a reputation of pulling up club members to 'check their driver's licence', then stand at the side of the road talking cricket for a half-hour.
Two seasons ago he scored 223 from 165 balls, which was the highest individual score in the history of our club, and also the association (although someone has since scored a triple century.)  Like all batsman he fancies himself as a bit of a bowler, sending down 'off spinners' with absolutely nothing on them.  He is ice captain, but as he (me!!) is travelling to Africa and England in January, the club will constantly telling us he has mastered the art of 'reverse spin' or 'spinning it Irish', and in response to this we decided to nickname him 'Hetro'(straight just like his bowling.)
Before I go, a bit about our competition.  Echuca South is one of 11 clubs in the Campaspe Cricket Association, which covers a large area on the border northern Victoria and southern New south Wales.  We play 14 rounds per year, nine of these being two-day matches (80 overs per side played over two Saturdays) and five one-dayers (40 overs per side.)  The only Sunday cricket played is representative cricket, where players can represent the league against other competitions-quite a few of our players take part in this.
Until next time, the best of luck to all players in coming league, friendly and mid week matches.

Steve Thompson

Police are on the look out for a tall, balding, ginger haired man who was seen suspiciously loading  bags of compost into the back of a very dodgy looking vehicle in Thorne.
Police say he is only dangerous when he has a bat in his hand, but as any Wiseton player will tell you the bat is not in his hands long enough this season to cause any sort of danger!!!!!
Sound like anybody we know???Mr Bell??

 Wiseton v Marshalls

A disappointing batting display cost Wiseton what should have been a first victory in the Burton & Dyson Evening League.  After bowling Marshalls out for 54 Wiseton collapsed to a shocking 44 all out.
Once again Richard Staves was the top batsman for Wiseton with 21 and was the only player to reach double figures as G Bell, Hewitt and Hunter all went for ducks.  Graham and Richard Bell were the pick of the Wiseton Bowlers finishing with figures of 3 for 14 and 2 for 21 respectively.

 Wiseton v Corringham

9 man Wiseton fought well in this match to reach a score of 121 with a good opening partnership that saw 50 on the board after only 4 overs from Graham Bell and Nev Carter.  Jack Bell playing his first game for almost 5 years also chipped in with 15 so to Richard Staves with 34.
In reply Corringham batted well and although Wiseton bowled and fielded well but the gaps in the field caused by the loss of two fielders took their toll and Corringham ham secured victory in the last over. Carter picked up 2 for 12 and Jack Bell 1 for 23 A good performance though by an under strength Wiseton and a first victory can not be far away.
M.O.M:  Jack Bell

 Wiseton v Ollerton
By Arthur Staves

Wiseton had to bring in two debutantes, Mike Potts playing  his first match for two years and 16 year old Robert Needham as a last minute substitute for this bank holiday fixture.  At 86 for 6 Ollerton may have been out for a low score but they finally made 138 all out.  Jack Bell took 4 for 43 and Graham Bell 4 for 30.
Once again the batting failed only Nigel 'Jack' Bell making any impression with 31.  No Wiseton player has made 50 so far this season in the league, a very disappointing start, the potential is there in any of the first 6 or 7 batsman but it is beginning to look as though every match is now a relegation battle.  107 is again a low score for a side that does have quality players.

M.O.M: Jack Bell

 Wiseton v Nuttall
By David Barker

10 man Wiseton won the toss and chose to field on what was a showerey summers day.
A steady opening partnership saw Nuttall reach 50 without loss, the only chance, a difficult one, was put down by Nev Carter. Golden arm  David Barker came on to bowl an soon bought both openers wickets and finished with figures of 3 for 45.  Nuttall scored quickly throughout the innings with all batsman contributing.  Both Adam Kay with 4 for 53 and Ryan Stubbins with 3 for 47 picked up wickets in the latter overs when Nuttall were trying to push the score on, which they did and eventually finished with 213 all out.
Ian Mather with a steady 16 and Nev Carter shared a 50 partnership to start the Wiseton run chase.  Carter's innings ended when on 71 he hit out and was caught.  Captain Hewitt scored a brisk 24 which included a massive straight six onto the Hall lawn.  93Jonty 93 Fawcett managed his highest score of the season with 9 in his handy partnership with Hewitt.  Wiseton ended 42 runs short of the Nuttall total with Extras managing the 2nd highest score with 42.

            M.O.M:
Nev Carter

 Wiseton v Misterton

Wiseton recorded their first Evening League victory with a win over local rivals Misterton.  After bowling Misterton out for 115, the wickets being shared between Barker and Carter, the Wiseton innings started badly when Jaimie Sumner was out for a duck to a ball that kept low on what was a very unpredictable wicket.  It wasn't until the pairing of Richard Bell and Richard Staves came together that the Wiseton run chase really took off with Bell reaching 21 and Staves eventually reaching his fifty when he hit the winning runs with a ball to spare.  A good victory which saw Richard Staves at last hitting some form which will hopefully carry on through into the Bassetlaw League on Saturday.

M.O.M:  Richard Staves

 Wiseton v Cottam

A Friday cup match meant many Wiseton regulars were unavailable but Wiseton still managed a victory which put them into the next round of the cup. Cottam chose to bat first and made 96 with Captain Carter taking 2 for 8 in his 4 over spell.  The Cottam batsman chose to take on the bowling of the unfortunate Simon Cox who was hit for 45 off of his 3 overs.
The Wiseton openers of Jamie Sumner and Bill Henton set about the Cottam bowlers, Sumner making 17 and Henton a beautiful 41 before being run out.  The father and son partnership of Chris and David Benson hit the winning runs which put Wiseton into the next round of the cup.
M.O.M:  Bill Henton

 Wiseton v R.H.P
By Arthur Staves

R.H.P completed the double over Wiseton.  Once again Wiseton made a low score of 104, Richard Staves making 26, Ian Ambler 22 and David Pike 10.  These being the only players to reach double figures, each player batting for over 1 hour.
In reply N Thompson hit many shots in the air before being caught by Kay for 42 off the bowling of Graham Bell.  Jack Bell bowled well his 17 overs cost 38 runs for 4 wickets.  Graham Bell and Ian Ambler both took a wicket but 104 was too small a total to give the bowlers a real chance.

M.O.M: Richard Staves

 Wiseton v Teversal
By Arthur Staves

On a small and high scoring ground at Teversall, the home side made 222 for 5 in their 46 overs.
Although heavy rain fell at times play was not interrupted.  George Platts took most wickets with 2 for 52 and David Pike bowled well in his 5 overs with figures of 1 for 15.
In reply Richard Staves tried to hold the Wiseton batting together with a good innings of 61, Daran Hewitt made a valuable 35, but it was left to John Sumner (20no) and George Platts (11no) to save the match for Wiseton and obtain maximum batting points. Wiseton finished their innings on 180 for 9 but we still have no wins so far  this season.

M.O.M:  Richard Staves

 Wiseton v Lea Park

Wiseton were lucky to be playing this match at all due to the fact it had not stopped raining all day but it was a good job they did as a second victory in the league has boosted our chances of staying in Division 2.  Once again Wiseton were reduced to 9 men but it didn't seem to make much difference as a good display in the field by Gourlay and Staves and bowling from Barker, Bell, Sumner and Kay meant Lea reached a score of 105 for 5 in their 14 overs.
In reply Wiseton only lost the one wicket as they cruised to victory, that of Jaimie Sumner, but not before he had made a powerful 68.  It was left to Nev Carter to hit the winning runs which he did in style by hitting a huge six towards the pavilion.  In the previous over Nev almost managed a six with his bat.  When he tried to pull a short ball the bat left his hands and travelled 25yards through the air and came to rest just behind square leg.
M.O.M:  Jamie Sumner

 Background and Policy

It was in 1877 that the first cricket matches were played at Wiseton.  27 years later the Bassetlaw League was founded (1904) an it composed of 11 teams.  Wiseton continued to play friendly cricket until at the annual general meeting of 1991 it was proposed to enter the Bassetlaw League for the season 1992.  It was said at that meeting that various members said 93They may be able to attract better players to the club94 but the then President, the late Geoff Spinks said,
93It is your club, you want to play in the league, enter a team as you are and achieve whatever level you can.94  This has been the policy ever since but still playing the probable best players in the Bassetlaw team.  It is a members club where players however good their cricketing prowess may be are still expected to help maintain the high standard of the ground and of the running of the club.
It was ironic that the first game should be played against Creswell, a founder member of the League and having their final season in the League.  The players who took part in this historic match were, G Bell, D Pike (72 not out) , N Carter, R Staves, N Bell, S Cox, D Brown, D Young, S Ogle, G Platts, P Snowball, so Wiseton started their Bassetlaw League career in Division 1 Section F with a win.  As can be seen 7 players who played in that opening game still play regular in the Bassetlaw side.  As in all clubs members leave and others retire but still go on to serve the club, new members appear and the spirit lives on, long may the club continue in good health, friendship and good sportsmanship.

 Wiseton v Roses

Wiseton were the underdogs for this cup quarter final but it didn't show as they trounced Roses with good all round performances from every member of the team.  Jack Bell was man of the match after his fine batting and bowling display, 17 with the bat and 1 for 21 with the ball on a difficult wicket, one other notable event took place during Jacks innings and that was to was to end up being  run out by Bill Henton which is a major achievement in itself!!.  Carter (38)and Sumner(17) put on an opening stance of 51 as Wiseton made a total of 97 for 7.
Roses in reply made 70 for 7 in their 16 overs, Richard Bell and Adam Kay taking two wickets apiece.  Chris Benson and Jack Bell bowled well in the latter stages to restrict Roses run scoring.
The draw was not kind to Wiseton as they now face a difficult away game against Retford in the quarter final.  The best of luck to all those involved.
M.O.M:  Jack Bell

 Wiseton v Cuckney
By Arthur Staves

At last a win for Wiseton even though a winning draw.  Batting first on a difficult wicket softened by overnight thunderstorms they made 138 for 62, Richard Staves was again Wiseton's top batsman with 35, Nev Carter looked in good form until he misjudged a straight ball and was promptly bowled for 23.  David Pike (17), Jack Bell (15) and Daran Hewitt (14no) all made useful contributions to the Wiseton score.
When Cuckney batted they were always behind the run rate, Nigel 93Jack94 Bell bowled very well, after bowling 21 overs his figures were 12 maidens 6 for 20 unfortunately his last two overs conceded 22 runs.  David Pike bowled well, 5 overs  1 for 25, these figures would have been much better and could have even won the game as terrible fielding with dropped catches and missed stumpings made it a comedy of errors!!  Lets hope this side of the game improves and a winning sequence takes the club further up the league.
M.O.M: Jack Bell

 Name: David Pike
Age:33
Club Status:  Top order batsman, Spin Bowler and  Wicket Keeper.

 Wiseton v Basford
By Daran Hewitt

On a day when half the team were still recovering from the previous nights festivities at Scott Hunters wedding, Wiseton played very well to record their fourth win of the season.  It was a lovely hot day and the opening bowlers of Ryan Stubbins and Richard Bell both finding the conditions to their liking with very economical spells, Stubbins picking up the only wicket with his last ball.  Dave Barker then came on to bowl and the Golden Arm of Spin put in a devastating spell with figures of 8 overs,4 wickets for 10 runs.  He had good support from Adam Kay who took 1 for 10 and Steve firth who wrapped up the innings taking 4 wickets for 17 runs leaving Baseford on 105 all out.  David Pike returned to his old and probably best position as wicket keeper and showed flashes of his old self by taking two catches, but he also dropped two which meant the dropped catch coffers swelled by 40 pence, ching ching!!
Carter and Pike opened the batting but it wasn't long before Pike was heading back to the pavilion with a duck to his name and another 20 pence fine, Ching Ching!!
Nev Carter received good support from both Kay and Fawcett as he made a superb 51 before being caught of the bowling of Miller.  It was left to Ian Robinson and Richard Bell to hit the winning runs as Wiseton reached Baseford's total with overs to spare.

M.O.M: Nev Carter and David Barker

 Wiseton v Tudor
By Simon Pixsley

The day started badly for Wiseton when Daran Hewitt lost the toss which meant Tudor chose to bat on a good wicket.Things got worse when David Pike and Ian Robinson both dropped sharp chances from the Tudor opener, these proved costly as he went on to make 104 in just 86 balls.  Steve Firth picked up to early wickets, Ryan Stubbins bowled beautifully but with no luck to finish with figures of 8-3-16-0 and Simon Pixsley was economical but with no luck.  It looked as though Wiseton would be chasing a huge target of around the 220 mark until Hewitt brought Kay and Pike on to bowl the final overs which turned things around finishing with figures of 3 for 46 and a brilliant 4 for 6 from David Pike. Roger 93Jonty94 Fawcett took one of the best catches you are likely to see off  the bowling of Pike, a low diving catch at mid on which left most of the team speechless.  Not to be outdone Captain Hewitt also took a good low catch to dismiss the opener who had made 104.
The Wiseton innings just went from bad to worse as the only person who showed any type of resistance was Adam Kay with a resilient 21 off 85 balls and was the last wicket to fall as Wiseton reached a score of only 58.  The only other batsman to reach double figures was Ian Mather with 10.  A bad day for Wiseton but its a long hot summer with plenty of games to come that will bring better results for Captain Daran Hewitt.

M.O.M: Adam Kay
