Wiseton Cricket Club - Inside Edge - July 1997.
July 1997
Volume 1, Issue 3
It has been a strange month July. It has seen us collapse to our
worst score in living memory and then produce a good performance to claim
our first 20 pointer of the season and then following it up with another
victory and 15 more points against Pilsley. The Sunday side has produced
some great displays this season and winning is almost becoming a habit,
lets hope it rubs off on the Saturday side.
Its good to have some new contributors this month. John Sumner
has wrote an article on his thoughts so far this season and there have
been various writers contributing to the weekly Sunday report. This is
what I would like to see more of as it makes everything much easier if
everybody contributes to the newsletter.
There has been a much better response this month on Daran Hewitts wordsearch
but it could still be better, after all there is a prize of beer or wine
for the winner depending on your taste ADZ
Wiseton v Corringham
As in the previous encounter with Corringham, Wiseton suffered another
close defeat. Batting first Wiseton made a total of 91 helped by
some powerful batting by Evening League debutante Javid Rashid who made
an impressive 35. Graham Bell chipped in with 17 and Hewitt with
10no.
In reply Corringham progressed steadily and reached their total with one
ball to spare, losing three wickets in the process.
A good display although its the points which are needed at this stage of
the season.
M.O.M: Javid Rashid
Wiseton v Retford
Another disappointing turnout for this evening game meant Wiseton fielded
only 8 men against the strongest side in the Division, Retford. We
put up a gallant effort in the field and restricted Retford to a score
of 158 with Graham Bell, Nev Carter and Daran'Homer'Hewitt picking up a
wicket apiece, Daran with his first two overs of the season.
In reply Wiseton started well enough with Carter and Sumner Jnr putting
on a good opening stand. Daran Hewitt played his shots to reach a
quick 31.
But as the wickets fell so to did Wisetons chances of a victory.
A good effort though lets just hope a few more players will be available
in the coming weeks as the evening season draws to a close.
M.O.M: Daran Hewitt
The Bell's are in the news again, this time its Richard.
He is not in his mothers good books at the moment. Whilst planning
his summer holiday with friends, he decided that they
would all set off at 4.30am Sunday morning to Cornwall. Sunday came,
and a series of loud knocks on the door bellowed through the house
at some ungodly hour which woke everyone up bar Richard. Guess who had
forgot to set his alarm!!!!
Wiseton v Misterton
Local rivals Misterton came here wanting revenge for their defeat at the
hands of Wiseton earlier in the season but they were to leave disappointed
as the Wiseton bowlers put up one of their best group performances of the
year.
Wiseton batted first on what was a difficult wicket to score runs on and
made a total of 71 for 8. Staves top scoring with 21 but it was number
7 Ian Mathers quick 15 which put Wiseton in a more comfortable position.
Misterton failed to make any sort of progress in replay as the Wiseton
bowlers of David Barker (1-11), Adam Kay (3-12), David Pike (4-9) and Dan
Greenhalgh (2-7) all bowling well to restrict Misterton to 41 all out.
A victory and some much needed points at this stage of the season.
M.O.M: David Pike
Cricketing Hero's
Do you have a cricketing hero?? If so write a quick article and it will
appear here in Inside Edge.
There are many, Sir Jack Hobbs, who played first class cricket until he
was 51, making 197 centuries - 98 of them after he was 40! If you
want me to choose on it would be Frank Worrell. Coming from Barbados
to play for Radcliffe, my Dad's home town, in the Central Lancashire League,
he was the first international player I saw. He was awesome.
He was also a fine man that my father admired which was and is important
to me.
We lived in Royton, which was the C.L team that I supported and when they
played Radcliffe I went and sought his autograph. I had to wait ages
until the great man signed and patted me on the head. That was 48
years ago and I still have the signature.
Sir Frank, as he became, was amazingly the first black man to captain the
Windies and started what we know to be the force of today.
sadly, he died of leukaemia at the age of 42, but not before he moved the
world regarding West Indies cricket. He was a wonderful player and
a truly great man who was respected wherever he went.

Wiseton Montage
I've finished the Wiseton display for our clubrooms, it looks really good.
I've got a couple of area maps on the left hand side, some information
in the top right hand corner and a montage of Wiseton photos underneath.
There is a banner at the top that says 'Our sister club in England - Wiseton
CC'. A couple of the committee are dropping in tonight to have
a look at it. If you look in an atlas Echuca is right on the
border of Victoria and New South Wales. The Murray River is the border,
and where it dips in the middle, and is closet to Melbourne, that is exactly
where Echuca is.

Wiseton v Harworth
Wiseton made the dreaded journey to Harworth with a full strength team
for the first time this season.
Wiseton batted first and looked in trouble at one point with the loss of
Staves for a duck and Sumner in the opening overs. Chris Benson with
24 and Daran Hewitt with 18 put Wiseton back on track and then a
good partnership during the final 2 overs between Adam Kay and Richard
Bell , Kay making 21 not out and Bell 11 not out giving Wiseton a total
of 107 for7.
Richard Bell was on fire with the ball, producing a fine display of bowling
which meant he finished with figures of 6 for 5. David Barker and David
Pike also took wickets as Harworth collapsed to 28 all out.
M.O.M: Richard Bell
There is a breathless rush in the close tonight,
Ten to make and the match to win,
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play and the last man in,
And its not for the sake of a ribboned coat,
Or the selfish hope of a seasons fame,
But his captains hand on his shoulder smote,
Play up! play up! and play the game.

Wiseton v Pilsley
By Arthur Staves
On a day interrupted by rain showers and an early tea Wiseton gained revenge
on Pilsley the side who bowled Wiseton out for 20. Winning the toss
Wiseton took the field with only 9 players. David Pike having
to work late and Adam Kay answering to a phone call from the ground at
2.45pm and dashing to the ground to make up the side.Pilsley made 108 for
8 in their 37 overs, David Pike bowling especially well taking 3 for 19.
Good bowling also from Jack Bell 2-36 and Nev Carter 2-23.
After 10 overs Wiseton were 19 for 2 but Richard Staves again batted well
scoring 41 and adding 36 with Barry Martin (19) and a further 35 with Nigel
(Jack) Bell who finished on 22 not out which included a huge six.
Daran Hewitt scored only 7 but his superb straight 6 helped the Wiseton
run rate at a crucial time. It was left to Captain Graham Bell to
score the winning run with 3 balls to spare.
M.O.M: Richard Staves
After winning the toss, captain 93Homer94Hewitt chose to field on
this warm summers day giving Nomads the chance to set a high target for
Wiseton. A good opening spell from Firth and Stubbins tied down the
Nomad openers thus giving away only 24 runs during the first 16 overs while
Stubbins picked up the first wicket. As it was a Sunday the first
bowling change saw Steve Bell and Matt Howcroft take the ball and fire
it in with some venom. Bell's first over for Wiseton this season
saw him take a wicket from a poor ball, however it was a wicket that proved
lightening does strike in the same place twice, as for the second time
this season Roger 94Jonty94 Fawcett pulled off a sensational catch.
The remainder of the Nomads team were then bowled out by Hewitt, Carter
and Ambler(3-3)setting his traps for 3 rabbits!! This gave a Nomads
a modest total of 88.
In reply Wisetons first seven batsman all chipped in although Mather (12)
being the only one to reach double figures. At this point Captain
Homer Hewitt was sweating a bit as as Wiseton were 47-7 with 13 overs to
go. The win was never in doubt though as Richard Ambler battled away
for 19no and the Hominater Hewitt??? blasting 23no thus sealing the victory
for the Wiseton Sunday side.

Another satisfying victory by the Sunday side to avenge the earlier
defeat at the hands of Tudor this season. having lost the toss we
knew that chance of success lay in getting rid of the Tudor opener who
reached his fifty in double quick time, inside 13 overs. But the combination
of a superb catch by Ben Durham and some deceptively slow and straight
bowling from David Barker led to his dismissal. Tudor lost their
way after this dismissal and wickets began to fall at regular intervals.Notable
contributions were made by Durham and Kay who each took three wickets as
Tudor reached a total of 116.
Wiseton in reply started at rocket pace with Mather dispatching two
balls to the boundary in the first over before he was caught out for 8.
However, Richard Ambler took over the anchor role and scored at the rate
of 1 run an over before being dismissed for 29. This brought Graham
Bell and Ben Durham together at the wicket, both batted well, but Durhams
quick 36 set Wiseton up for the victory. His dismissal brought Carter to
the wicket who wrapped up the victory with a glance to fine leg.
Bell finished on 28 not out his highest score of the season.
So victory to Wiseton without the aid of inspirational skipper Daran Hewitt
and proves we can win without him. Stay away Daz!!!!!

that of any other team members. By the way Daran says take

Wiseton v Lea Park
By Arthur Staves
At last a 20 point win for Wiseton. Good bowling from Ian Ambler
4 for 20, Nigel Bell 4 for 41 and 16 overs 2 for 22 from John Sumner dismissed
Lea Park for 116 in 45.3 overs. Simon Cox took 3 catches behind the
stumps and Barry Martin 2 at Gully and but for dropped catches once again
the score could have been much lower.
James Sumner had his best innings of the summer with 56 not out dominating
the Lea attack in partnerships with Richard Staves and Ian Ambler, but
it was left to Nigel Bell to finish the game off when the scores were level
with a magnificent six.
M.O.M: James Sumner
This friendly match took on a whole new meaning when Wiseton player
David Pike chose to play for the opposition.
Wiseton were put into bat by the Centralian Captain and started very fluently
with Nev Carter making 19 and Ian Mather 25 and was eventually caught with
3 overs to left in the innings. A useful 16 from Roger Fawcett and
a quickfire 21 from Adam Kay meant Wiseton eventually finished with a total
of 117 for 7.
Mr Pike finished the innings with figures of 2 for 12 off of his 7 overs
for Centralians.
In the field there were some outstanding bowling performances, David Barker
leading the way with 2 for 18 and was unlucky not to have more, Richard
Bell bowled 3 overs and finished with figures of 1 for 2. Richard
Ambler turned his arm over for the first time this season and finished
with 4 wickets for just 27 runs, although he seems determined to win the
dropped catch award with another 2 drops to add to the previous weeks 3!!!
There were 8 dropped catches in total which meant club funds were again
boosted but it is a side of the game that Wiseton must improve upon if
we are to win more games in both the friendly and league matches.
Pike managed to reach double figures for the opposition before being out
off the bowling of Richard Ambler. Centralians batted out the innings
and made a total of 87 for 8 which meant another good victory for Wiseton.
M.O.M: David Barker and Adam Kay
Hewitt won the toss and elected to bat an a very hot Sunday.
Graham Bell and Ian Mather opened the Wiseton innings and made a solid
partnership of 35 before Bell lost his wicket for 17. Carter(18)
and Hewitt(19 made good partners for I.T.M as he steadily reached his half
century in the 35th over. Mather was eventually out for 62 with 3
balls of the innings left 2 of which accounted for the brothers Ambler
who were both out for Golden Ducks. Ryan Stubbins opened the bowling
and claimed a wicket with his first ball of the innings. Wickets
fell steadily and Gamecox were reduced to 40 for 7 with some great bowling
from Stubbins, Firth, Barker and R Bell. Ian Ambler bowled the prize
wicket of the day that of Simon Cox for another Golden Duck, Simon is the
Saturday keeper for Wiseton but plays for Gamecox on a Sunday. Gamecox
ended their innings on 82. Another great victory for the Sunday side.
M.O.M: Ian Mather
There were 70 teams in Division 1 for the 1992 season. These
were divided into six sections, 12 teams in sections A, B, C,D and 11 teams
in sections E and F.
As new members we were allocated to Section F.
The first match against Creswell was played on April 25th at Wiseton Hall,
that victory was followed by another victory over Bilsthorpe, again at
home. There were two changes from the previous weeks side, Marcus
Bell making his first of only two appearances for Wiseton and Steve Braithwaite
who had enjoyed many seasons of friendly cricket for the club. In
a low scoring game Graham Bell took 3 for 8, Nev Carter 3 for 12, George
Platts 2 for 11, Nigel Bell 1 for 4 and Simon Cox 1 for 0. In reply
Nigel Bell made 39 and Richard Staves with 16 was the only other player
to make double figures.
The first home defeat was at the hands of Harthill, a team who are becoming
stony rivals. Although Wiseton were to finish third in the league
they did not win a match from the 30th of May until they defeated Welbeck
Medan Vale on July the 18th at Wiseton. 12 point wins were recorded
for every game from then until the end of the season with the exception
of 4 points for a rained off game against G.N.C.S Worksop.
Outstanding performances that season were 86 not out by Barry Martin in
only his second game for the club, he also had a 79 not out against Weston
later in the season. David Barker in his only appearance in the league
taking 7 for 58 and Nigel Bell 7 for 31 being the best bowling performances.
Barry Martin topped the league averages with 344 runs at an average of
59. Graham Bell scored 360 runs at an average of 32.73 and took 25
wickets. Nigel Bell scored 254 runs at an average of 28.22 an took
39 wickets averaging 11.49. Nev Carter was 5th in the league bowling
averages with 27 wickets averaging 10.33.
So ended the first season, a promising start with high hopes for 1993,
could they be fulfilled we shall see in Part 3 of Wiseton in the Bassetlaw
League.
CHRISTMAS DINNER
It may only be July but Christmas will soon be upon us and Wiseton will
be having its Christmas Dinner on the Saturday 13th of December at the
Cattle Market in Retford. The cost of this is A313.95 which includes
a disco afterwards. See Adam for details.
Lincoln Indoor League
By Nev Carter
Wiseton had their best ever season in the winter indoor league in Lincoln,
finishing an excellent 3rd in the Premier Division. Out of a total
of 12 games, we won 8 and lost only 4.
The nucleus of the indoor team have been playing together for over 10 years
and have a good understanding of the indoor game and of each other!
This is particularly important when running quick singles and knowing when
to take risks.
On the batting front, Nev Carter, Graham Bell and Dennis Brown all scored
over 200 runs and averaged over 20, which is very good for a 12 over game
where you have to retire at 25!!
The Bowling was also consistent with none of the regular bowlers going
for more than 10 an over on average. Andy Bichan and Rich Bell were particularly
tight . In indoor cricket fielding is specially important and
the Wiseton team have some renowned fielders. George Platts stands
at mid-on glaring at the batsman, daring him to get a ball past him.
He is often seen hurling his body through the air to make dramatic catches
and stops, and the batsmen must think his hands are coated in glue!!
Roger Fawcett has made an art of fielding just behind square on the leg
side, which in indoor cricket is very near the bat. He pulled off
some excellent catches last season, with the batsman looking in disbelief
as the ball stuck in his hands.
In the cup, Wiseton lost in the 3rd round to Sleaford who went on to the
final.
WISETON WEB UPDATE
The Wiseton Web Page has had over 200 visitors to its site although the
counter has now reset itself to zero. All those visitors now know
who we are and even worse have seen pictures of who we have playing for
us, Pikey, Jack and Baz, what a sight!!!
Captain Hewitt won the toss and chose to put the opposition in to
bat first. Stubbins and Kay opened the bowling, each bowling their
8 overs at an economical rate, Stubbins 2-6 and Kay 1-25. The Trentside
batsman then took control and punished some wayward bowling from R Ambler
in particular as they reached a total of 167 for 7.
Wiseton in reply started badly with chairman Mather going cheaply to a
caught and bowled for just 3. The majority of the Wiseton players
reached double figures with Rashid, Pike and Fawcett all making scores
in the teens. Despite this Wiseton were always behind the required
run rate and scores in the twenties from Potts, Hewitt and R. Ambler still
left Wiseton requiring 40 runs from the final 4 overs. It was just
too much in the end as Wiseton lost by 22 runs. Matt Howcroft bagging another
duck to lead the Special mentions to Ryan Stubbins for his tight
bowling, Richard Ambler for his quick fire 27 and the old warrior Mike
Potts for his innings of 25.

Wiseton v Retford
Cup Quarter Final
10 man Wiseton almost pulled off an amazing victory in this rain affected
game. The match was reduced to 10 overs a side with Wiseton batting
first. Nev Carter played some fantastic shots in his 68 which helped
Wiseton reach a total of 118 for 3.
In reply Retford attacked the Wiseton bowling and lost only two wickets
as they reached the Wiseton total with only 3 balls to go.
A good performance though and a good achievement in reaching this stage
of the competition considering our league form.
M.O.M: Nev Carter
Wiseton v Lea Park
In this crucial bottom of the table clash a win was vital for Wiseton if
we are to retain our second division status. Good bowling from Nev
Carter, Graham Bell, Steve Firth with 3 for 4 and David Barker with
4 for 7 restricted Lea to 66 for 9. In reply the Wiseton innings
didn't start well with David Pike falling to the the first ball of the
innings for a Golden Duck and Daran Hewitt to the sixth also for a duck.
Enter Richard Staves who steadied the ship with a solid 34no and
Adam Kay with a steady 31no to guide Wiseton to victory and surely secure
their place in Division 2.
M.O.M: Richard Staves &

Kay
Wisetons first visit to Plumtree on one of the summers better days
saw skipper Daran Hewitt win the toss and elect to bat. Nev Carter
negotiated the first over comfortably but the first ball of the next over
saw Ian Mather returning to the pavilion with a Golden Duck to his name
and his pocket 20 pence lighter. Graham Bell joined Carter at the
wicket and between them put on 48 for the second wicket before Carter was
bowled for 30.
Wickets fell regularly during the next 7 overs with Daran Hewitt joining
Ian Mather by collecting a Golden Duck. Wiseton found themselves
at 66 for 7 after 23 overs when Bell was caught for 27.
A partnership of 27 between Adam Kay and Richard Bell took Wiseton to 98
before Bell was out for 16. Richard Ambler joined Kay and was not
out 15 at the close, but Kay was stumped on 24 with an over to go.
Wiseton finished their innings on 121 for 9.
Plumtree started their innings confidently and had scored 26 before Ryan
Stubbins broke through. A further wicket fell with the score on 31,
again off the bowling of Stubbins who finished with figures of 8-1-12-2.
Richard Ambler and Graham Bell took up the bowling and wickets fell regularly
by the time Plumtree reached the 70's. Bell finishing with figures
of 8-2-16-3 which earned him the man of the match award.
By the time the last over was to be bowled by Kay, Plumtree had only one
wicket in hand and required 7 runs to win. A dropped catch mid way
through the over by Richard Bell gave them a run and left Plumtree requiring
3 runs off the final ball to win, but a shocking final ball was smacked
to the boundary thus giving Plumtree the match by one wicket.
M.O.M: Graham Bell
Wiseton v Pilsley
By Arthur Staves
The captain Graham Bell was forced to bat first on a very soft and wet
wicket because of players arriving late due to work commitments.
Nobody though expected Wiseton to set a new record for their lowest ever
score in the Bassetlaw League and quite possibly one of the lowest
in the history of the club, certainly in recent times, as they were bowled
out with just 20 runs on the board.
No player was able to reach double figures, Graham Bell top scoring with
7!! Barry Martin made his long awaited return to the side but only
managed one run. This was obviously a bowlers pitch, but the Wiseton
bowlers did not trouble the Pilsley openers as they knocked off the runs
without losing a wicket. The ground was in a poor condition after
three weeks of torrential rain which probably contributed to Wiseton's
downfall. Hopefully things can only get better. I Hope!!!
M.O.M: Arthur Staves (Club Scorer) for having to watch and record
the display!!!
Wiseton v Marshalls Cavaliers
Another poor turnout for this evening league match meant Wiseton fielded
an 8 man side for the second time in as many games.
Wiseton batted first and a steady start was made by Henton and Mather.
Henton top scored with 33 and some handy contributions from Greenhalgh
and Carter meant Wiseton reached a total of 86-6.
In reply Marshalls opening partnership soon reached the Wiseton total with
a few lofty blows off the bowling of Barker, who was unlucky in that he
had a very good shout for LBW turned down and also a refusal in the field
from Steve Firth at long off, not that it would have made much difference
to the eventual outcome.

My first input into Inside Edge comes by way of a big thank you to
all concerned with the production a very fine club mag. I have shown
it to several friends and cricketers alike who also rate it very highly.
Well done boys!!!!!
As we are perched at the foot of the table halfway through the season I
must tell you that in over thirty years of playing league cricket I have
never been in a relegated team - we know there is always a first time but
I believe that we are good enough to escape relegation - so keep going.
apply yourselves and we will survive.
I am very much looking forward to the two BBQ and Discos - a first for
Wiseton and they should be good nights (book the taxis).
