Balmoral Castle - home of the Queen when residing in Scotland9) Balmoral Castle   The Queen's highland holiday home. Exhibitions, gardens, cafeteria, souvenir shops, pony trekking and pony cart rides.   Open:   1st May -31st July, Mon-Sat 10am-5pm
Off A93 between Ballater and Braemar.   There are, of course, countless number of stories relating to this famous castle and the trick is in separating the real from the fictitious.     The 'fictitious' tales are very interesting indeed but the most amazing ones of all are those that, after considerable investigation, appear to be the 'real thing'.   At the time of the theft (recovery) of the Stone of Scone from Westminster it is said that Balmoral Castle became it's 'hiding' place while a copy was being produced from a granite rock acquired in the Aberdeen area.    Now Jacob's pillow, as it was affectionately termed (explanation lost in the mists of time - or could be made up for you if you insist!) when spirited out of the Castle became like the pea in a shell game as to this day one does not know if the 'Stone of Destiny' which was returned to Edinburgh in 1998 was indeed the original.    Many, with good reason, have their doubts but you can be sure that this will not be the last 'tale of the Stone' you will hear as you travel about Scotland.   Enjoy them all!

10) Edinburgh- Tattoo The atmosphere, the spectacle of the Edinburgh Tattoo - don't miss it.  To witness and hear the Massed Pipe Bands as they parade on the castle esplanade will surely raise the hackles on your back.   Stirring they are and if you do get the chance to be in the audience do not pass it up.    Not only pipes and drums are represented but brass, flute and marching bands from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and indeed anywhere in the world where top class bands originate.   The show is never disappointing (can't say that about the weather though!) and you'll be creating great memories for yourself and your loved ones just by attending the Edinburgh Tattoo..   It runs usually at the same time as the Edinburgh Festival but not necessarily on the same dates.   Check on the dates and make sure you buy your tickets well in advance as the performances on the day are usually sold out   Seriously ....a not to be missed event!.
