More About the Little Fellas...

There are supernatural creatures in many traditions but the folklore of Northern Europe in particular is rich with tales of mythical beings. Stories of fairies, elves and wizards, goblins and gnomes, often associated with the forests and mountains, have been passed down over generations. It is hard to believe that these are without foundation and that these wonderful creatures have actually never existed in some form and at some time in history.

Victorian gnomes were superbly detailed and in beautiful earth colours

The existence of dwarf like people in Scandinavia has been documented as early as the 13th century. They were thought to be mischievous and have magical powers.

Gnomes have been made for hundreds of years and there are superb examples of ceramic gnomes to be found in Germany and Austria dating back to the mid 1700’s.
They feel incredibly lifelike and the attention to detail is of the highest quality.

There are examples of Victorian Gnomes cast in clay and metal and these also are finely sculpted and painted in the beautiful earth colours that you would expect to find in an English country garden.

THE NAUGHTY GNOME COMPANY was founded by the artist and sculptor Tom Woodall in 1999. Some originals were made in plaster and a limited number of these still exist.

In a search for real quality and durability,  Tom decided to turn back to the best examples of early European gnomes for  inspiration. The master copies are still made in clay, being the best material available to achieve very fine detailed modelling. They are then cast in resin which allows every minute detail to be reproduced and is the most durable of modern materials. Special earth colours are then mixed in paints that make a lasting bond with the base material.

There are 20 models just waiting to be released over the next few years. Only a few new models will be sold each year to allow you to build up your collection. It is the intention that all models will be available in both large and small sizes so that you can decide whether to start your collection for the garden or the fireside.

Each gnome is copyright stamped on the base and issued with a Birth Certificate to guarantee its authenticity. A catalogue will be published each year to check on available Models.
