Senators in "top 1000" sites

The magazine "Its on the net", in the spring 2002 issue (issue 7) rated this site as one of the top 1000 websites. When one considers that there are in excess of a billion websites, that's not bad going!

The item was on page 130 under Sport and American Football and gave the wrong address because of a misprint. (They have been told.)

It says as a description, "Well known Gateshead Senators team with fixture list" and the star section was "easy Q and A's" .

One might disagree about the "star section" - how about the 1999 final game report? - but thanks anyway, "Its on the net".

2002 Division alignments announced

Caesars out, Wolverines back!

The Senators will face some familiar opponents in Division One Northern Conference. Nottingham Caesars drop to Division Two (but probably not for long!) and Lancashire Wolverines return to the top division. The season will be ten games, playing each team at home and away.

Senators' home games are tentatively fixed for 12 May, 19 May, 2 June, 16 June and 7 July, but these depend on stadium bookings and are almost certain to be varied before the final fixture list is published.

It is hoped to arrange some pre-season matches.

Club takes its own domain name

Gateshead Senators have a new domain name reflecting the name of the club. This action was taken partly for reasons of PR, partly because the size of the ever growing website means it may have to move yet again at some point in the future.

The Senators' website starting six years ago as a relatively small site hosted on AOL (remember that "gatsen" URL?) but has moved twice since, with all the changing and notification that this entails. By using our own domain, wherever the site is hosted, the URL to access it will remain constant.

The old URL will continue to work at least for the time being, but it might be best to change that bookmark/favorites entry before you forget.

2002 Fixtures announced

Late rush in ten game schedule

The Senators face a ten game season in 2002, five at home and five away. Tough opponents East Kilbride are met at home and away in the earlier part of the schedule, with a gap of a few weeks, but the season ends with a bang, five games in as many weeks, including Birmingham Bulls home and away just two weeks apart. Good news is that at no time is the club "on the road" two weeks in succession, giving more balance to the season. The ten game schedule finishes for Gateshead on 21 July, before some other teams, so the Senators may be left waiting for others results before the playoff picture is clear.

Roman triumph over Senators

Chester Romans 31 Gateshead Senators 15

Report from Gary Marshall

On a bright sunny afternoon in Chester, the dedicated few that made the long journey took the field. Gateshead kicked off to Chester who started at their own twenty. After running several plays and gaining only one first down, Chester fooled the defence on a fourth and four with a punt fake. This punt fake resulted in the Romans marching all the way to the five-yard line. They were then stunted by the Gateshead defence and had to settle for a twelve-yard field goal. Gateshead first possession of the game soon ended with a punt deep into Chester territory, on the first play of their next drive, Chester were picked off by Mark Sloan who returned the ball five yards to the Chester twenty nine.

John Harrison
John Harrison
Craig Million then rumbled the ball down to fourteen where John Harrison then ran into the end zone, with Marshall's pat successful, the score was now 7-3 in Gateshead's favour. From the ensuing kick off, the Romans used good special teams to return the ball to the Gateshead nineteen-yard line. The Romans then moved the ball to the one-yard line where on fourth down after an excellent defensive stand, the Romans scored. With the conversion, the score going in at half time was 10-7 to Chester

With David Nimmins moving to receiver and Lee Fraser returning as quarterback, the second half started much the way of the first. The drive stalled and resulted in an excellent forty-seven yard punt to put the Romans deep in their own half. The fired up Gateshead 'D' then stopped the runner for a loss and sacked the quarterback in consecutive plays. This drive resulted in a punt, which again Gateshead failed to capitalize on. The Gateshead 'D' again stood firm and the resulting punt allowed Gateshead to string eleven plays together to get the ball down to the Romans three-yard line. The gods were on the Romans side that day as Gateshead then turned the ball over through a fumble on the two-yard line

The Romans then ground the ball out to get to the Romans thirty-two. A broken play from this position allowed the Romans to score again to make the score 23-7, which was then followed up with a successful pat to make the score 24-7 towards the end of the third quarter. On the following drive, after taking a sack, Lee Fraser threw a costly interception as it was ran back in from twenty yards out to make the score 31-7 early in the fourth. Gateshead then put a quick drive together as time ran down to move seventy-five yards in two plays to score with 1 minute 32 seconds remaining, John Harrison scoring his second TD of the day following David Wilson's excellent catch. The two-point conversion was good which at the final whistle made the score a disappointing 31-15 to the Romans.

Scots' score scrapes past

Gateshead Senators 0 v East Kilbride Pirates 6

Report by Gary Thompson

On Saturday 18 May, in appalling weather, two good football teams came head to head in a rain soaked stadium. After receiving the ball and driving into rain, East Kilbride went three and out, and had to punt to Gateshead. Starting their first drive of the game on their own thirty, Gateshead tried unsuccessfully in the driving rain to move the ball. After going three and out, Gary Marshall punted the ball deep into Kilbride territory forcing the Scots to start their next drive on the eight-yard line. Kilbride then strung a sixty-yard, ten play drive together to get to the Gateshead twenty-two. After losing last week, the fired up Gateshead 'D' stood firm and the ball was turned over on downs to give the Gateshead offense another shot. As the weather deteriorated, Gateshead offense again went three and out, another excellent punt from Marshall ended the first quarter with no score.

Starting the second quarter on their own nine-yard line, the next Scottish drive was snuffed out on three and five when Mickey Thompson batted the ball down from the Kilbride receiver to force the punt. The ball then changed hands several times. The following Scottish drive that threatened came from a short punt into driving rain that was returned to the Gateshead forty-yard line. After a twenty-four yard pass down to the thirteen and with time running out in the half, Scotland went for glory with a pass to the left corner of the end zone. This was picked off by Wimmie van Tergouw and returned through the melee to the nine-yard line. Gateshead again could not move the ball and the half ended with the scores 0-0.

Wimmie van Tergouw

The second half started much the way of the first, the driving rain caused problems for runners trying to make cuts and prevented them gaining additional yards. After the punt, Kilbride again drove downfield and were halted by the on-form Gateshead 'D'. After reaching the Gateshead twelve-yard line, the ball was turned over on downs after an incomplete pass. A fifteen yard penalty against the Pirates meant that Gateshead then took over on their own twenty-seven but failed to capitalise on the momentum. After exchanging punts a couple of times, Scotland took the initiative and drove down to the Gateshead goal line. On second and two after a blocked run up the middle, EKP QB Gary McNey threw the ball out which was picked of for the second time by Wimmie van Tergouw with no return. The shift quickly went back to Kilbride as the Gateshead offense fumbled the ball on the four-yard line, which was recovered by Kilbride. As the Scottish offense penalised themselves and went back to the eight, the ball was then fumbled on the next two plays. Recovered the first time by Kilbride, but the second time by a well-drilled Gateshead Peter Gannon, the opportunity for Kilbride to score disappeared. With less than eleven minutes in the game, punts again were exchanged. Kilbride then put a last drive together starting on their twenty and moved the ball using old-fashioned running play. After ten straight running plays, the Scots had eaten up the clock as well as moving the ball down to the eighteen-yard line. A frozen rope pass from Gary McNey on third and six was caught just one yard into the end zone with one minute thirty remaining in the game. Kilbride then tried for the two pointer, which was met by the Gateshead 'D' on the line of scrimmage leaving the score at 0-6 to the visitors. As time ran out Gateshead fought the clock and the weather to make a small gain but to no avail, the game ended with a loss to Kilbride to make Gateshead 1-2 in the league.

As a bystander, this has been one of the most hard fought games seen and reminds me of the defensive struggles of yesteryear NFL teams. The commitment shown by the Gateshead team as a whole in adverse conditions deserves much praise.

Redditch Routed

Gateshead Senators 40 Redditch Arrows 0

Both teams entered this game with something to prove, Redditch to lay the ghost of their two defeats by Gateshead last season and the Senators of their crushing defeat by East Kilbride two weeks earlier.

Dave Wilson goes in motion.
Dave Wilson goes in motion.
Carl Hadaway kicked off for the Senators and straight away Gateshead's veteran Steve Wooton set the tone for the home defense with a hard hitting tackle on the Redditch runner. Redditch had to turn the ball over on downs which set the pattern for the first period as each team tried to get the measure of the other. It was not to be the Arrows' day though. Even when they might have expected a touchback from a Gary Marshall punt, quick Mark Lindsey stopped the ball at the Redditch one to pin the visitors' next drive back against their own endzone.

Mikey Rumney

The second quarter looked better for Redditch when Gateshead QB Lee Fraser was intercepted by Adrian Bishop, who immediately capitalized by catching a 23 yard pass from Stuart Innes. Even though Innes kept the ball to run for a first down on a fourth and long, bringing his team to the Senators' 7 yard line, the Gateshead defense tightened up when it was needed and gained the ball on downs. Gateshead opened up the field with a 60 yard run by Craig Million for the first score. Fraser passed to Dave Wilson for the 2 points, making the score 8-0. Redditch further compounded their woes when Innes missed a snap, the ball going through the endzone for a safety, giving the Senators a 10-0 lead. Redditch had to kick the ball away, and on Gateshead's next drive, Dave Wilson took the ball 31 yards on a reverse to the Redditch 2 yard line. Mikey Rumney followed up with the TD run and with Gary Marshall's PAT, the score was 17-0, which was the half time score.

Mickey Thompson pounds out the yardage.

After the break, Redditch refused to surrender and brought several Gateshead drives to nought. But with Mickey Thompson piling on the yardage, Gateshead went further ahead when Lee Fraser's 10 yard pass across the middle found Dave Wilson in the endzone. Fraser made the most of the excellent protection by the Senators "O" line he enjoyed to pass the 2 pointer to Steve Wooton from 8 yards out, after a penalty on Gateshead's first attempt. At the end of the third period, the score was 25-0.

In the fourth quarter, Mikey Rumney ran in again from the 1 yard line, Marshall's kick making it 32-0. Redditch fought back, but their drives were stopped by a John "Rapper" Lockhart recovery of a fumbled snap and late in the game an interception by Wimmie van Tergouw which led directly to Lee Fraser's 3 yard touchdown pass to Dave Wilson with seconds to go. The two pointer was an option pass by David Nimmins to Mark Lindsey bringing the final score to 40-0.

Lancs test Senators to the last

Gateshead Senators 46 Lancashire Wolverines 44

On a gusty day which made both passing and kicking problematical at times, Gateshead and Lancashire fought one of the closest and most nailbiting encounters in league history right to and beyond time expired.

Craig Million cuts back, David Nimmins in front.

Carl Hadaway kicked off for Gateshead. In the first quarter, Lancs were the dominant team and the Senators seemed ragged and error prone. They paid the price when Lancs QB Adam Purcell passed 27 yards to former Senator Iain Mullins to open the scoring for the visitors. Rob Tingle carried the ball over for the two pointer, bringing the score to 0-8 in favour of the Wolverines.

In the second quarter, the Senators offense started find their rhythm, but were thwarted by a four down goal-line stand by the Lancs "D", finally stopping Dave Wilson's effort on fourth down at the one. But the Gateshead defense was also fired up, and Lancashire went four and out, but their fourth down punt only went eight yards, giving the Senators the ball on the 12 yard line. Craig Million (16 carries for 122 yds, 1 TD) took full advantage and ran in the 12 yards for the TD. But Lee Fraser's 2 point attempt failed, leaving the score at 6-8. After Gary Marshall's kick-off, Lancs Danny Bowles returned the kick to midfield and soon a grateful Adam Purcell passed again 27 yards to Iain Mullins to increase Lancs lead 6-14. Gateshead's next drive ended with Marshall's punt to coffin corner, pinning Lancs back at their own 8 yard line. They could not move the ball and Gateshead's Lee Fraser drove the Senators downfield in a classic two minute drill drive which narrowed the gap again with Dave Wilson's 6 yard TD run, Fraser's 2pt pass failing, bringing the score to a tantalising 12-14 to Lancashire. Lancs' next drive finished with a negative punt attempt giving Gateshead the ball on the 32 yard line. With time in the half almost gone, Fraser passed those 32 yards to David Nimmins in the endzone. Marshall's PAT was blocked, leaving the score at the half with the Senators leading for the first time, 18-14.

The second half started with Gateshead receiving the ball. Mikey Rumney's running formed the backbone of the first Senators' drive with a 26 yard gain, capped by a half yard TD run. Lee Fraser passed to Craig Million for the conversion, increasing the home team's lead to 26-14. The Wolverines' response was immediate with a 15 yard scoring run from Phil McGrath, and he obliged again with a 2 pt run to narrow the gap to 26-22. True to this see-saw game, Gateshead replied with David Nimmins (5 catches for 92 yds, 3TDs) catching a 34 yard scoring strike from Lee Fraser. The 2 point attempt failed, leaving the scoreline at the end of the third period 32-22.

After the change of ends, Lancashire came straight back with Rob Tingle's 2 yard TD run, which he repeated for the two points to bring the score to 32-30. Not content with a two point lead, Gateshead replied with another Lee Fraser strike from 11 yards to David Nimmins, followed by a Gary Marshall PAT to make the score 39-30. The Gateshead defense was caught out by QB Adam Purcell's "keeper" 12 yard run. Rob Tingle's run added the two points to bring Lancs to within one point, 39-38 at the two minute warning. But this astonishing game was far from over. Lee Fraser, (13 of 23 for 162 yds, 3TDs, 0 ints) who was not sacked at all in the game, again gave a demonstration of how to run a two minute offense, leading a drive that culminated in Mark Lindsey's run from the 2 yard line. Another Gary Marshall conversion kick made the score 46-38. Adam Purcell then gave a demonstration of his own to lead Lancashire downfield to the Gateshead 10 yard line with 3 seconds left on the clock. His pass to Neil Sullivan brought the score to 46-44. All that remained was for the untimed down of the conversion attempt. But Gateshead's defense held firm, denying Lancashire the draw and leaving Gateshead Senators narrow winners after the nerve-wracking finale of a remarkable game.

Bulls batter sixteen Senators

Birmingham Bulls 56 Gateshead Senators 0

Report by Gary Thompson

After a thrilling victory last weekend, Gateshead faced a long journey to the Midlands to play Birmingham. On a day where the Senators needed to stand up and be counted only sixteen players made the five-hour journey. After receiving the kick-off, Birmingham took just four plays to score with a run by Paul Powell. Gateshead seemed stunned after the point after and then went three and out on their first possession. After a Gary Marshall punt to the Birmingham forty-yard line, Birmingham quarterback Andy Sweeney constructed an eleven play, fifty-five yard drive. This culminated in a touchdown pass to receiver Mark Cohen in the left corner of the end zone to make the score 14-0 at the end of the first.

With Gateshead on the back foot and playing iron man football, the team knuckled down to solid running by Craig Million and Mike Rumney. The offence however could not gather any momentum on the next two drives and Birmingham added two more scores before the half.

Mark Sloan
Mark Sloan
The second half started again with the Gateshead offence led by Lee Fraser going three and out. The Gateshead defence led by leading tackler Mark Sloan had a chance to stop Birmingham on the Gateshead goal line when running back Leon Cordingley fumbled the ball. The luck was not with Gateshead as the ball was recovered in the end zone by Birmingham's Andy Moloney to increase the margin to 34-0. As the third quarter ended, Gateshead's Dave Wilson was unlucky not to hang on to an errant pass from the bulls quarter back Andy Sweeney.

With the end of the game in sight, Lee Fraser could not repeat his heroics of last week's two-minute drill to get points on the board. The game finished with another touchdown by Mark Cohen to make the final score Birmingham 56, Gateshead 0.

Gateshead however can hold their heads high, after a plucky performance where most players played both ways for three hours the team now face a home game to keep them in the playoff race. The Senators face Chester Romans at Gateshead Stadium with a score to settle after narrowly losing to the Romans earlier in the season.

Senators rule Romans

Gateshead Senators 20 Chester Romans 0

The Gateshead defense achieved their second shutout of the season against Chester Romans. The Romans received the ball at the kick off, but had to turn the ball over on downs. The rest of the first quarter was spent exchanging possession through punts or turnovers after 4th downs, amid a series of penalty flags.

The second quarter continued in much the same way, the principal highlight being a long run to the endzone by Duncan French - which was called back for holding. Gateshead QB Lee Fraser was getting good protection, not least from "O" linemen Mark Hume and also Andy Cooper, until recently playing on the "D" line. Even so, the determined Chester defense broke though more than once to disrupt plays in the backfield and to sack Fraser. But at the half, neither side had legally crossed the plane.

Chester kicked off after the break, but soon had possession again themselves. They achieved a first and goal only to fumble the ball at the half yard line, which then rolled through the endzone. The referee signalled for a safety but tripped over one of many players scrabbling to catch the ball. Eventually a touchback was given. On Gateshead's following possession Mikey Rumney again doggedly ground out yards for the Senators, leading to Craig Million (6 for 107 yds, 1 TD) running the ball 53 yards on 2nd and 10 to break the scoring drought. Lee Fraser's two point pass was incomplete, leaving the score at 6-0 to the Senators. Both sides traded punts before Lee Fraser (7 of 20 for 62 yds) led the Senators to the Chester 32. Then David Nimmins threw the option pass those 32 yards to Mark Lindsey to bring the score to 12-0. The 2 point attempt was no good as the quarter ended.

In the fourth period, Craig Million forced a fumble which was recovered by Dave Wilson. The ensuing Gateshead possession was capped with an 18 yard touchdown run by Duncan French (15 carries for 116 yds, 1 TD), Lee Fraser's pass to Steve Wooton for the conversion making the score up to 20-0. In the last two minutes Chester QB Steve Waite led a strong drive to try and break the shutout, but was intercepted by Mark Lindsey in the dying seconds of the game, killing all hope of narrowing the margin of defeat.

Senators' Head Coach Gary Marshall praised his team saying, "Congratulations to the whole offense who performed well and backed up the defense who so often save the game for us."

Bulls battle to Beat Senators

Gateshead Senators 3 Birmingham Bulls 28

Birmingham Bulls travelled to Gateshead for this end of regular season game, but if they were looking forward to a repeat of their 56-0 win over the Senators a few weeks earlier, they soon realised it was not be. This was hard fought game and the Bulls had to fight hard for their win.

The Bulls early optimism seemed justified when Leon Cordingly's scoring run put them in the lead, with the PAT taking the score to 0-7. Signs of a Senator revival came when Bryan Mann's long run toward the endzone was stopped by Craig Million at the 3 yard line. Two plays later Cordingly ran the ball in from the one yard line, but Gateshead drew extra heart when Andy Sweeney's PAT was blocked to keep the score at 0-13. Craig Million (6 tackles, 1 assist, 2 ints) again made his mark with an interception of a Sweeney pass, but as the quarter ended, the Senators had to punt.

Craig Million

Million carried on in the second quarter as he had left off in the first, with another interception of Sweeney. Again though, the Senators' drive came to naught when Duncan French (20 carries for 76 yards) fumbled the ball which the Bulls recovered. Birmingham had to fight for their yardage and the Senators' defense put a four down goal line stand that led to a turnover on downs. Lee Fraser ( 10 of 26 for 144 yds, 0 ints) then took the Senators down the field on a nine minute twenty play drive to the Birmingham 10 yard line, but Gateshead had to settle for Gary Marshall's 27 yard field goal as the half ended, bringing the score to 3-13.

In the second half, Gary Marshall had to punt the ball away again, but then Leon Cordingly caught the Senators' defense wrong footed and took the ball on a long run to the Gateshead 12 yard line. But again, the home defense denied the Bulls in another four down stand and Gateshead took the ball on downs as the third quarter ended, the score still at 3-13.

Mark Sloan refuses to let go of the interception.
Mark Sloan refuses to let go of the interception.
Mark Sloan intercepted Sweeney to give the Senators ball again, but two plays later Dave Langford recovered a Senators fumble and returned 8 yards for the score. The 2 point conversion brought the score to 3-21. The teams continued to trade possessions, until Bryan Mann took the ball over from the 3 which with Sweeney's kick brought the score to 3-28. The Senators continued to contest every play and in the dying seconds on a fourth and long, Craig Million came to within half a yard of the score but was literally bounced off the goal line by three determined Bulls defenders at which point the referee held the ball aloft to announce full time.

This result almost certainly means the Senators' first playoff game will be away to London Olympians in two weeks time.

Senators' Season Stopped

London Olympians 31 Gateshead Senators 0

Report by Gary Thompson

We few, we happy few...
"We few, we happy few..."
(Photo: sent by Mark Sloan)
Gateshead Senators' 2002 campaign came to an end on Sunday (4 August) when they were defeated 31-0 away to London Olympians in the first round of the playoffs.

The Senators did just enough this season to earn the playoff spot with a 5-5 record, which ranked them 7th out of the 28 teams in the league.

This now was a chance to show the footballing community just what the Senators were made off. Only twelve players made the trip to London on the 8.30 train out of Newcastle, facing an almost impossible task. Meeting up with four more players from the Lancashire and Dutch contingent, Gateshead made their way to south London to face the as yet undefeated Olympians.

Rookie of the year, Rich Cowell
Rookie of the year, Rich Cowell
Unlike Chester who conceded their playoff game and gave the win to East Kilbride, Gateshead players had pride in their hearts when they took the field in the shadow of Canary Wharf. Gateshead kicked off and looked tired as London returned the ball deep into Senator territory, they may have gone all the way if not for a lunging tackle by rookie of the year Rich Cowell. London then took 6 plays from the 32 yard line to drive the ball in for an early TD. Gateshead then went three and out on their first possession and had to punt the ball back to the Olympians close to the half way line. The Olympians then actually went three and out which we were later informed was the first time this season. They had expected Gateshead to turn up and roll over and not expect the aggressive fighting spirit that makes the Senators what they are. The Senators' next drive allowed runs by the outstanding Mike Rumney and Garry Catherall to start the Olympians arguing among themselves. The drive ended with another excellent punt by Gary Marshall into the endzone for a touchback. The ball was then punted back and forth until a broken play allowed the Olympians to score from a 45 yard pass. With half-time approaching, a field goal by London's Andy Boyle made the score 17-0. The heavens then opened and thunder and lightning caused the referees to call a halt to the game for the players' safety.

With the restart of the game and torrential rain limiting the passing game, Gateshead quickly went three and out and gave the ball back to London. The Olympians then marched 59 yards in 10 plays to make the score 24-0. Gateshead then finally put some offense together with darting runs from John Harrison pushing the 'O's defense to breaking point. The drive ended with an incomplete pass to Eric Bodemeyer on a third and long. London went on to add another score before time expired making the final score London 31, Gateshead 0. The end of the game also ended another legend in British American football, Mark Sloan, the all round star of many a Senator game announced his retirement after many years in the game. Mark's final act was to take a snap from center and hand the ball to Mike Rumney for a short yardage gain. Playing quarterback was the only thing Mark had not done in his long distinguished career on the football field. Mark was clapped off the field by both Gateshead and London and will be sorely missed when the new training camp starts in a month's time.

Although Gateshead lost the game, the area should feel proud that we made the effort where so many others would have not. Gateshead Senators this season have shown that it's more than just a game. This reporter is proud to say that he feels part of the 'Sunday Family', a group of guys who train, play, drink and support each other. It's good to know that whatever else goes on in the world, every Sunday the family comes together to make the team strong and play football like brothers.

Presentation Night 2002

Another playoff season

The Presentation Evening was held on Friday 27th September at the Schooner Inn, our excellent hospitality sponsors.

Club Chairman and Head Coach Gary Marshall introduced the evening by opening the AGM, which preceded the Presentations. Much of this was concerned with financial matters, as the club had ended the season owing some money, but also being owed money. The club is financially sound but there was an urgent need to address the problem of cash flow. After some discussion, the meeting voted overwhelmingly to introduce a new payments system for subscriptions. (See player information).

The team trophies
The team trophies
The business meeting over, the evening then moved on to the season review and presentation of awards. Coach Gary Marshall praised the "Sunday Family", especially the core of players and others whose commitment keeps the club going. While other teams may have high sounding mottoes, the Senators' "Sunday Family" proved that it was once again one of the most enduring and committed teams in the country. Gary singled out for mention those who made the long trip south to play against the Olympians in the playoffs when other teams had cried off tough fixtures. He likened the team on that day to Henry V's "happy breed of men" before Agincourt. (The Senators are an erudite lot!)

The trophies were then presented. The evening continued with an excellent meal provided by "The Schooner Inn" in the best tradition of Gateshead hospitality.

Gary Marshall also gave special certificates to those who had made the journey south to play the Olympians which included a section from Shakespeare's "Henry V".

Committee member Barry Hicks presented Debbie of the "the Schooner Inn" with a bouquet as a token of thanks for the support given to the Senators in 2002.

With apologies to Will Shakespeare - here's the amended, i.e. Senator, version of the Agincourt speech.
