Mickey Thompson

Mickey Thompson 1964 - 2004Mickey Thompson 1964 - 2004

The whole Gateshead Senator "Sunday Family" was shaken by the news on Easter Monday 2004 of the sudden and tragic death of long time Senator Mickey "Big Mik" Thompson. On a sunny day on a quiet road in Northumberland Mickey came off his motorcycle and was run over by a car coming the other way.

What Mickey lacked in stature (for "Big Mik" was not a reference to his physical size) he more than made up for in character, determination and grit. He earned praise from his family of course, where he was a much loved husband, son, brother and grandson, also from his fellow medical professionals at the hospital where he worked and of course from his team-mates at the Senators.

Mickey Thompson's funeral service took place Tuesday 20th April at 1:30 at St John RC Church Annitsford.
Then burial was at Cowpen Crematorium, Blyth at 2:15. Many members of the Senators 'Sunday Family' attended, with approximately three hundred people filling the church, standing along the back and down the sides. Mickey's long time friend and former Senator Paul Kane read an address.
The wake followed at Cramlington Village Working Men's Club, Cramlington Old Village.

For many years the irrepressible #6 "Big Mik" was an integral part of the Sunday Family, only stepping down from active playing the year before.
All the Sunday Family extend deepest sympathy to Mik's wife and family.
