The Poole Games

Min

In 1975 Min invited a few members of her immediate family around for a Sunday lunch. Unbeknown to Cecil and herself, word spread and a total of 40 people turned up on her doorstep that day, as a surprise. Additonal food had been brought along to supplement Min's casserole ...... athough it was said, that by the time Min had watered down her original 5 person casserole to feed 40, it wouldn't really have tasted very different. There was putting on the lawn along with a few other games too. Such a good time was had by all, that the following year Min & Cecil decided to extend an open invitiation to any Battrick family member who could make it for the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Thus the Poole Games was officially born in 1976 at Blandford Road, Poole.

The annual event takes place at any relative's house, who is mad enough, and has the room to accommodate the various assortment of caravans and tents that turn up, to offer to hold it. Bribery to hold the event has been known to take place. With well over 100 members now in the family, one can expect around 60+ people to descend on your property for the weekend, spoil the tranquillity, upset your neighbours, and trample mud through the house. You always wanted that new carpet ....didn't you?

The Poole Games has been held all over the country, from Dover, Folkestone, Fareham, Bridport, to Wheathampstead, Buckden [Cambs], Llanfyllin, Lyndhurst and up to Kendal. Distance is no object and even members of the family from the far flung corners of the Wider World have made the event. We all keep in touch via The Battrick Bugle, a bi-monthly [or nearly:)] magazine, which has been edited, printed and stapled together by Keith's fair hands, also since 1976.
