THE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIXTH CLUE WRITING COMPETITION ===================================================== Many thanks to Brian Spollen for moderating CWC 135. It is time to announce the 136th Clue Writing Competition, as originated by Ian Gent. As usual, you will find 2 words at the end of this message, encoded in ROT 13. You are invited to compose cryptic clues for either or both of these words and to submit them to me at: tagies@ibm.net The deadline for entries is 11:59 PM (your time), Tuesday, September 15th. I'll post the winners, and other clues, with comments, as soon as possible thereafter. You can submit only one official entry per word, but you may enter as many bonus clues as you wish. Please label bonus clues clearly; they will probably be commented on, but they won't be officially judged. If I haven't acknowledged receipt of your clue(s) within 2 working days, please resubmit. Do not post your clue(s) to the newsgroup. Please include 'CWC 136' in the subject line of your e-mail. Each entry must include: 1) your clue(s) 2) a clear explanation of your clue(s) 3) your name [only included in results for winners etc] 4) your e-mail address [not included in results] 5) an indication of whether you are willing to moderate CWC 137 The winner of each CWC is invited to moderate the next one. The second word is intended to be harder to clue than the first. My preferences lean toward clues that have smooth surfaces, are solvable, and are grammatically correct on the cryptic level. Here is the key to the code. The words follow after 13 lines. As usual, you will find 2 words at the end of this message, encoded in ROT 13 (Don't ask me why!) You are invited to compose cryptic clues for either or both of these words and to submit them to me at: cwc139@tmac.clara.net The deadline for entries is Friday, November 27th which is my wedding anniversary. :~) I'll post the winners, and other clues, with comments, as soon as possible thereafter. Please include 'CWC 139' in the subject line of your e-mail. Each entry must include: 1) your clue(s) 2) a clear explanation of your clue(s) 3) your name 4) your e-mail address [not included in results] 5) an indication of whether you are willing to moderate CWC 140 Entrants who prefer anonymity will have their wishes respected if so noted in their clue submission. Otherwise, like Jacob in the previous round, I will credit each clue to the author in the final posted results, but no email addresses will be posted to the group. The winner of each CWC is invited to moderate the next one. The second word may be somewhat harder to clue than the first. I like originality and mis-direction. The use of bog-standard indicators that we've all seen a thousand times will be marked down, as will any clue that could not be appreciated by an international audience. I am happy to receive *any* type of cryptic clue; my only criteria are whether the clue is solvable and that it does not include any glaring errors. If you can make me smile or kick myself, all the better. Large donations may also be taken into consideration ;~) Here is the key to the code, and the words themselves, after 13 lines.
